Who are the winningest coaches in NFL history? Andy Reid stands alone as the only active coach in the top five
Reid would need to coach in the NFL for at least five more seasons to become the coach with the most wins

There is no doubt that among active head coaches, Andy Reid is the winningest and most experienced entering the 2026 NFL season , boasting three Super Bowl wins with all of his titles and five of his six total appearances coming with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback.
Reid is entering his 28th season as an NFL head coach, including 14 seasons in Philadelphia and now 14 in Kansas City, where he has endured only four losing seasons and secured playoff appearances in 20 of his 27 years , easily easier said than done.
Reid enters this campaign coming off his toughest year with the Chiefs (6-11) after achieving nine consecutive AFC West titles and playing in three straight Super Bowls.
Andy Reid Among the Winningest Coaches in NFL History
With his three Super Bowl rings, Reid trails only legendary skippers Chuck Noll (4 wins) and Bill Belichick (6 wins) among the most decorated champions in league history.
In terms of regular-season wins , he ranks fourth all-time with 279 victories , sitting behind only Bill Belichick (302) , George Halas (318) , and Don Shula (328) . To catch Shula, the legendary Dolphins coach, Reid would need to rack up at least 10 wins across roughly five more seasons.
Given that he has Mahomes under center, that milestone doesn't sound far-fetched at all, the real question is whether he wants to keep coaching for another five years. In the postseason , Reid is already the second winningest coach in NFL history with 28 total playoff victories (including 18 with Kansas City).
Among other active coaches, he is followed closely by John Harbaugh (24) , Mike McCarthy (22) , and Sean Payton (20) , all of whom look to pad their win totals this year.
The Chase: Where Active NFL Coaches Rank on the All-Time Wins List
Following Reid's 279 regular-season wins is Sean Payton with 184 (13th all-time) ; Payton has found his franchise quarterback in Bo Nix and could crack the top 10 with a 10-win season in Denver.
Right behind Payton is John Harbaugh with 180 wins (14th all-time) , who is entering his first year in New York with the Giants and could also push into the top 10 with an 11-win campaign.
Mike McCarthy follows with 174 wins (15th all-time) and takes over a new team in Pittsburgh, ironically marking a tight cluster of three consecutive veterans on the all-time list finding fresh starts.
Further down the active leaderboard, Sean McVay sits in fifth place among active coaches with 92 wins (50th all-time).
However, McVay has only nine years of head coaching experience and remains very young at just 40 years old, meaning if he maintains this incredible start to his career, we may well be talking about him in the same breath as Reid down the road.
