Fernando Mendoza’s best friend? Brock Bowers could be headed for NFL history with the Raiders

The numbers suggest it may not be as far-fetched as it appears for the tight end

The spotlight surrounding the L as Vegas Raiders this season has largely focused on rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza and the organization's hopes of building a new era around the former college standout. But if the Raiders are going to exceed expectations and emerge as a legitimate playoff contender, their biggest weapon may not be under center.

It may be lining up at tight end. According to NFL and fantasy football analyst Matt Okada, Raiders star Brock Bowers has a legitimate chance to accomplish something that once seemed unthinkable: break the NFL's single-season receptions record.

The current mark belongs to Michael Thomas, who caught 149 passes for the New Orleans Saints in 2019. It's a record many believed would stand for years, particularly given how difficult it is for any pass catcher to consistently command that level of volume across a 17-game season.

Okada believes Bowers has the perfect situation to challenge it

At first glance, the prediction sounds bold. But the numbers suggest it may not be as far-fetched as it appears. Bowers already demonstrated his ability to thrive under less-than-ideal circumstances. During his record-breaking rookie season, the Raiders' tight end hauled in 112 receptions, setting a new NFL rookie record despite catching passes from a revolving door of quarterbacks that included Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Desmond Ridder.

Even more impressive was the fact that Bowers remained the focal point of opposing defensive game plans every week. Defenses knew the ball was coming his way. They still couldn't stop him. Now the situation around him appears significantly improved.

The Raiders enter the season with greater stability at quarterback thanks to veteran Kirk Cousins and highly regarded rookie Fernando Mendoza. While Cousins brings experience and accuracy, Mendoza represents the future of the franchise and has already generated excitement throughout the organization because of his poise, decision-making and ability to distribute the football.

Bowers could become the ultimate security blanket

Young quarterbacks often rely heavily on elite tight ends because they provide large catch radiuses, favorable matchups and reliable options over the middle of the field. Throughout NFL history, some of the most successful young quarterbacks have accelerated their development by leaning on dominant tight ends. Mendoza may have the perfect one.

That dynamic could become one of the Raiders' biggest advantages. While many teams feature multiple star wide receivers competing for targets, Las Vegas enters the season without a true high-volume receiver expected to challenge Bowers for opportunities. Jakobi Meyers remains a productive and dependable option, but the roster lacks the type of target-hog receiver who would significantly reduce B owers' workload.

It's worth remembering that Meyers caught 87 passes last season despite the instability at quarterback. If the Raiders' passing game takes a step forward under Cousins and Mendoza, the overall offensive pie could become larger, creating even more opportunities for Bowers to dominate. The implications extend beyond individual records.

For the Raiders to surprise people this season, Mendoza must develop quickly and the offense must consistently move the chains. Bowers helps accomplish both objectives. His versatility allows him to line up all over the field. He can operate as a traditional tight end, split out wide like a receiver or create mismatches from the slot. Defensive coordinators often have no ideal answer for a player with his combination of size, speed and route-running ability.
