Klint Kubiak keeps starting QB position open between Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins: “I don't want anyone to get too comfortable”
The veteran and No.1 pick are battling for control of Las Vegas’ offense before Week 1

The Las Vegas Raiders expected their quarterback competition to be one of the biggest storylines of the 2026 offseason, and head coach Klint Kubiak has made one thing clear that nobody has done enough to claim the job yet.
With veteran Kirk Cousins and No.1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza competing for the starting role, the Raiders entered preseason with two very different options at the most important position on the field. Cousins offers experience and stability, while Mendoza represents the future of the franchise.
But after Mendoza ’s first preseason start against the Houston Texans , Kubiak refused to indicate that the rookie had moved ahead or that Cousins had secured the position.
“We got another week. I don’t want anyone to be comfortable in their job,” Kubiak said. “It should always be that way for all positions. So, let’s keep going.”
The message from Las Vegas’ head coach has kept the pressure on both quarterbacks as the team prepares for its regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins .
Mendoza received the starting opportunity against Houston and played the entire first half, completing 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards. The former Indiana quarterback also threw his first NFL interception, which was returned for a touchdown by Texans linebacker Wade Woodaz .
Despite the mistake, the rookie remains in contention for the starting role. Cousins , meanwhile, watched the opening half from the sideline before Aidan O’Connell took over in the second half.
The veteran joined the Raiders in April on a five-year, $172 million contract, a commitment that appeared to position him as the early favorite. However, Kubiak ’s approach suggests the organization is willing to evaluate every option before making a final decision.
Mendoza focused on growth after first NFL start
The rookie quarterback understood the importance of his first preseason start and viewed it as another step in his development.
“Coach Kubiak outlined for the team what the plan was going to be with the starters, essentially for Weeks one, two and three of the preseason, [and] to keep it internally,” Mendoza said.
“That was something I knew going into the game was going to be a great experience as a first start in the NFL preseason, which is always the next step.”
While the interception was a difficult moment, Mendoza focused on improving his mechanics and decision-making as he adjusts to the speed of professional football.
“Maybe stepping up in the pocket,” Mendoza said when asked what he could improve. “Maybe stepping side to side to give [me] a little bit more time and try to best serve my teammates.”
The Raiders ’ quarterback decision carries significant consequences. Starting Cousins would provide a proven veteran presence, while choosing Mendoza would accelerate the development of the player the franchise selected first overall.
Aidan O’Connell ’s strong preseason performance has also given Las Vegas another option, although the main competition remains between Cousins and Mendoza .
The Raiders still have time before Week 1, but Kubiak ’s comments have ensured the battle remains open. Instead of handing the job to the veteran or rushing the rookie into action, Las Vegas appears determined to let performance decide.
