New Orleans looks to extend its streak at the Caesars Superdome against a strong Raiders team

The NFL Season 3 Week gives us an interconference matchup with very different stories on each sideline. Both teams are coming off a win in Week 2, but the opening context is markedly different.

The Saints made a statement on the road: 24-17 in Baltimore against the Ravens , after having narrowly lost (30-31) in their debut in Detroit. The Las Vegas Raiders, meanwhile, come in undefeated (2-0), temporary leaders… or rather, second in the AFC West on point differential behind Kansas City, after dispatching Miami (27-13) and the Chargers (26-14).

In the overall standings, the Raiders are in seventh place with a perfect record, while New Orleans sits in eleventh, tied in a very tight NFC South.

"How did the Raiders and Saints start the season?

The Las Vegas Raiders had the perfect start ; the Week 2 win over the Chargers made this team's hallmarks clear. Quarterback Kirk Cousins distributed the ball with surgical efficiency: 19 of 29, 253 yards, and 3 touchdown passes with only one interception, for an average of 8.7 yards per attempt.

Its big beneficiary was receiver Tre Tucker, who torched the opposing secondary with 5 receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown, including a 42-yard play. The defense, led by Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker, held the result, while veteran Maxx Crosby continues to be the face of the pass rush.

The point to watch is the running game: rookie Ashton Jeanty averaged only 2.3 yards per carry (21 attempts, 48 yards) against the Chargers. Las Vegas will need more from its running back to avoid becoming one-dimensional.

New Orleans Saints continue to grow with youth; QB Tyler Shough calmly led the victory in Baltimore: 27 of 34 for 252 yards, one touchdown pass and one rushing score, with no balls lost through the air. Chris Olave once again served as their anchor: 8 receptions, 86 yards, and a TD on 10 targets. Tight end Juwan Johnson contributed 66 yards and Devaughn Vele another 64. On the ground, Alvin Kamara remains heavily involved in the passing game (5 receptions), although the rushing numbers were modest.

The defense was decisive: Chase Young recorded 1.5 sacks and Julian Blackmon intercepted Baltimore, two plays that tilted an extremely close game.

Key matchup: Cousins' attack against New Orleans' secondary

The key matchup will be whether the Saints' secondary, with Kool-Aid McKinstry, Martin Emerson Jr. and Blackmon himself, can stop the Cousins-Tucker connection that did so much damage last week.

New Orleans allowed only 17 points in Baltimore, controlling the clock and limiting the Ravens on third down. That control was key: the Saints won despite being even in total yards.

On the other side, the statistics from Vegas's victory over the Chargers show an opportunistic team: they forced multiple fumbles and their secondary was lethal, with Hezekiah Masses recording 2 interceptions for 29 yards. If the Raiders once again force turnovers, Shough's youth could be exposed in the Superdome.

Implications for playoff seeding

Neither of the two is yet fighting at the top of their division, but every victory matters. The Raiders are in second place in the AFC West, behind only the also-undefeated Kansas City Chiefs; a road win would keep Vegas in the conversation among the conference leaders.

For New Orleans, stuck in an NFC South pack where Carolina leads at 1-1 and where Tampa Bay and Atlanta started 0-2, a home win would put it at 2-1 and with its head clearly above water in a division that looks open.

At the bottom, the NFC South features two teams in early trouble: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons, both with 0-2 records. The Falcons, with a poor -38 point differential (16 points scored, 54 allowed), are the hardest-hit team in the conference to start the season. Every result in the division reshuffles a standings table in which no one wants to be left behind so soon.

Forecast for the Raiders vs Saints

The betting market sees the Saints as favorites due to their home-field advantage: New Orleans to win is priced at 1.62 (61.4% implied probability) compared to Las Vegas at 2.58 (38.6%). The point spread is around 3-3.5 points in favor of the Saints, and the total points ranges between 43.5 and 44.

The Superdome factor and the clock control that New Orleans showed in Baltimore tilt the balance toward the home team, but an undefeated and opportunistic Raiders squad, with a sharp Cousins and a secondary that has already notched four interceptions in two weeks, has more than enough arguments to pull off the upset. Probable scenario: a close game decided by less than one possession, with New Orleans coming away with the win in a tight scoreline, close to the total points line.
