Tom Brady explains the true emotional reasons behind his partnership with Gucci

The seven-time Super Bowl champion is embracing a completely different kind of challenge away from football

T om Brady has spent much of his life operating in environments where preparation, routine and control were essential.

From becoming one of the most decorated quarterbacks in NFL history to building a career in business and broadcasting after retirement, the 49-year-old has rarely been associated with stepping into unfamiliar territory.

That changed this year when Brady became part of Gucci's latest fashion story, including a headline-making runway appearance in New York and a new campaign for the Italian luxury house's fall-winter 2026 collection.

For Brady , however, the partnership appears to represent more than simply adding another major brand to his résumé.

In a recent interview with GQ, Brady explained that the attraction was partly the opportunity to challenge himself and move beyond what he already knew.

He acknowledged that fashion was not necessarily his primary world, even though he had long appreciated well-dressed men and had attended some of the industry's biggest events.

Brady said: "I’ve always paid attention to a degree. I’ve been to plenty of Met Galas in my life, and I’ve always enjoyed stylish men’s clothing and suits, but I played it by ear on this particular occasion. I don’t come in with any preconceived notions. I just kind of take the opportunity for what it is, and then go for it.”

That attitude goes some way toward explaining why Brady was willing to make such an unexpected appearance.

From the football field to the Gucci runway

Brady made his Gucci runway debut in May during designer Demna's first cruise show for the fashion house, staged dramatically in Times Square.

He walked in an all-black leather outfit, an image that was a long way removed from the suits and athletic gear associated with his football career.

The setting itself was extraordinary. Gucci transformed part of Times Square for the show, creating a spectacle that brought together major names from entertainment, fashion and sport.

Brady's appearance was particularly striking because of how unexpected it was: one of the NFL's most recognizable figures suddenly found himself walking a runway rather than standing on a football sideline.

His involvement has now gone beyond that one night. Brady is one of the stars of Gucci's fall-winter 2026 campaign, photographed by Michal Chelbin alongside figures including Alex Consani, EsDeeKid and Shawn Mendes.

For Brady , the experience has also challenged some of his own assumptions about fashion.

The former quarterback admitted that he had never previously worn leather-on-leather in the way he did for Gucci, but was surprised by how comfortable the clothing felt. He even compared some of the structure of the outfit to the familiar feeling of a football uniform.

That comparison is revealing. Brady's success throughout his sporting career was built around adapting to new situations while maintaining confidence in his preparation.

The Gucci experience appears to have given him another opportunity to apply that mindset outside football.

Rather than presenting himself as a fashion expert, Brady has approached the collaboration with curiosity. His comments suggest that the emotional appeal lies in doing something unfamiliar and accepting the uncertainty that comes with it.

That is particularly significant for an athlete who has already achieved almost everything possible in his original profession.

With seven Super Bowl victories and a record-setting NFL career behind him, Brady no longer needs to prove himself on a football field.

Instead, Gucci has offered him a different kind of test: being willing to look unfamiliar, experiment with his image and trust the creative process.

And that may ultimately be the real reason the partnership has appealed to Brady. It is less about reinventing himself completely and more about remaining open to experiences he might once have considered outside his comfort zone.
