F ernando Mendoza ’s first start with the Las Vegas Raiders against the Houston Texans could not have gotten off to a worse start. The rookie quarterback opened the game with most of Las Vegas’ second-team offense around him, but on just his fifth play, he made a mistake that immediately turned into points for the opponent.

Mendoza attempted to complete a short pass over the middle of the field, but linebacker Wade Woodaz read the play perfectly, intercepted the throw and returned it 80 yards for a defensive touchdown .

The play may have been the result of a miscommunication on the Raiders’ offense. Running back Mike Washington appeared to start moving after Mendoza released the ball, leaving Woodaz in the perfect position to make the interception and race untouched to the end zone.

The pick-six came shortly after the Texans’ offense marched down the field on its opening possession and scored a touchdown, quickly giving Houston a 14-0 lead .

The interception was reminiscent of what happened during Tuesday’s joint practices between the Raiders and Texans, when Mendoza also threw a pass that was returned for a touchdown.

In that instance, the mistake came after several strong plays from the rookie. Now, Mendoza will need to show the ability to move past the error and respond as he continues to be evaluated during the preseason.

Mendoza’s mistake could give Cousins more time as Raiders’ starter

Kirk Cousins remains the favorite to open the season as the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders , a scenario that would allow Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick in the Draft, to continue developing behind an experienced NFL veteran.

After his impressive performance in the previous game, some began to believe Mendoza could be ready to compete for the starting job immediately. However, his latest outing, highlighted by a pick-six against the Texans, could strengthen the case for keeping Cousins in charge of the offense while the rookie continues his development.
