Tom Brady receives an interesting offer from a free-agent running back to replace Ashton Jeanty
Veteran running back opens door to potential Raiders reunion

Austin Ekeler’s free-agent wait could become interesting for the Las Vegas Raiders if Ashton Jeanty’s ankle injury keeps him sidelined or limits his availability for Week 1.
The veteran running back is healthy, available and still looking for his next NFL opportunity after becoming a free agent earlier this year.
Ekeler has reportedly drawn interest from teams, although nothing has developed into serious negotiations. However, the Raiders could present an appealing destination, particularly because of his connection to the Las Vegas area.
When asked about a potential move to the Raiders, Ekeler didn’t hide his interest. He acknowledged that playing for his hometown team would be a dream for his family while also explaining exactly what he could offer.
“I’m unemployed right now,” Ekeler replied to reporter Madyson Marie. “Being in my hometown now, now my hometown anyway, would be a dream for my family. I know that is the situation, right? We’ll have to see. How is Jeanty feeling? Do they need another guy?"
Jeanty injury gives Raiders another decision to make
Jeanty suffered an ankle injury during practice after diving for a low throw from quarterback Kirk Cousins.
The second-year running back couldn’t put weight on his right leg and needed assistance from trainers to leave the field, immediately raising concerns about his availability for the season opener against the Miami Dolphins.
Fortunately for Las Vegas, subsequent reports suggested the injury isn’t expected to be long-term. Head coach Klint Kubiak has continued to describe Jeanty as being “on the mend” while emphasizing that the Raiders are counting on him. Still, that doesn’t guarantee he’ll be ready for Week 1.
If Jeanty can’t play, or if the coaching staff decides to limit his workload, rookie Mike Washington Jr. could receive an expanded role. Washington has already taken first-team repetitions and impressed during the preseason, giving Las Vegas an internal option.
Ekeler , though, would provide extensive NFL experience and proven ability as a receiver out of the backfield.
During his 2024 season with Washington, Ekeler averaged 4.8 yards per carry and caught 35 passes for 366 yards. His receiving ability has been one of his biggest strengths throughout his career, and he became a dependable safety valve for Jayden Daniels during his time with the Commanders.
That versatility could be particularly valuable for a Raiders offense still working through questions at quarterback.
Whether Cousins or rookie Fernando Mendoza eventually leads the offense, having a veteran running back capable of protecting the quarterback and contributing on passing downs could provide some welcome stability.
Ekeler’s Achilles injury ended his 2025 season after only two games, but he has since been medically cleared. The question now is whether a team believes he can immediately return to his previous level.
There’s little reason for Las Vegas to panic while Jeanty’s injury remains manageable. Washington gives the team another option, and the Raiders clearly expect Jeanty to return. But if his ankle doesn’t respond as hoped, Ekeler’s offer could suddenly become much more appealing.
