Tom Brady's curious record: how to earn more money than he did as an NFL player
The seven-time Super Bowl champion is now earning a remarkable sum from his second career in broadcasting

T om Brady spent 23 seasons becoming one of the most decorated players in NFL history.
Yet one of the more unusual financial records attached to his career has emerged after retirement: the former quarterback can earn more from talking about football on television than he did from actually playing it.
Brady agreed to a reported 10-year, $375 million contract with FOX Sports in 2022, before he had officially ended his playing career.
The agreement made him the network's lead NFL analyst and remains one of the most lucrative broadcasting contracts in sports history. NFL.com reported the deal at the time, with Brady set to work alongside play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt .
The numbers become particularly striking when they are compared with Brady's earnings as a player.
According to Spotrac figures cited by Sporting News, Brady earned approximately $332.96 million in NFL contracts during his career. His FOX agreement, meanwhile, is worth $375 million over a decade.
That means the reported value of his broadcasting contract exceeds the total amount he earned from NFL playing contracts across more than two decades.
That does not mean Brady is literally receiving $375 million immediately, nor does it account for endorsements, investments and his other business interests.
It is a comparison between the reported value of his FOX contract and his documented NFL contract earnings. Still, the contrast is remarkable.
From a sixth-round pick to the NFL's highest-paid broadcaster
Brady entered the league in 2000 as the 199th overall selection in the NFL Draft. His initial playing contract was modest compared with the enormous deals now associated with elite quarterbacks.
Over time, however, his success led to increasingly valuable contracts with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers .
His career ultimately included seven Super Bowl victories, six with New England and one with Tampa Bay.
He also earned three NFL MVP awards, 15 Pro Bowl selections and three first-team All-Pro honors. FOX Sports' official biography records his six Patriots championships before his move to Tampa Bay, where he won another title during the 2020 season.
Despite that extraordinary success, Brady's annual compensation as a player generally remained below the level of his eventual FOX salary.
His reported FOX contract works out to $37.5 million per year. Sporting News noted that Brady's average annual NFL earnings across his playing career were considerably lower, although his compensation varied significantly from season to season.
His highest reported playing earnings came in 2021, when he made about $39.4 million with Tampa Bay.
The FOX deal therefore represents an unusual reversal. The quarterback who spent his career throwing touchdown passes is now being paid at an elite level to explain what happens on the field.
Brady began his FOX broadcasting career during the 2024 NFL season after taking a year away from football following his final season with Tampa Bay.
His debut came alongside Burkhardt during the Dallas Cowboys-Cleveland Browns opener. FOX had made the scale of the investment clear from the beginning, placing Brady at the center of its NFL coverage.
The transition was not without a learning curve. Brady acknowledged that television required him to translate instincts that had become automatic during his playing career into words for viewers.
“To use your voice and vision for a live television audience, there’s a lot of adrenaline in that, but it was very different from when I played. I would probably see all these things, I didn’t have to verbalize them,” Brady said in reflecting on the transition.
“I knew subconsciously what to do, and my body just took over because that’s how I trained it. When you embrace the uncertainty, you work as hard as you can to prepare yourself, knowing that you’re going to wish you had done some things over.”
By the 2026 season, Brady is in his third year as FOX's lead NFL analyst. The network continues to build its coverage around his profile, including a new 2026-27 promotional campaign featuring Brady and Michael Strahan .
The size of Brady's broadcasting contract also reflects how valuable major live sports rights have become to television networks. Top analysts can command enormous salaries because their knowledge, fame and ability to attract audiences become part of the value surrounding a broadcast.
That trend is not limited to Brady . ESPN recently agreed to a six-year, $108 million extension with veteran play-by-play announcer Joe Buck , taking his average annual salary to approximately $18 million.
For Brady , however, the numbers have an especially unusual symmetry. He spent 23 years accumulating more than $332 million in NFL contracts, then moved into broadcasting and signed a deal worth $375 million over 10 years.
His playing career made him famous enough to command the contract. His broadcasting career is now turning that fame into another enormous source of income.
In that sense, Brady's post-NFL career has produced a financial achievement that would have been difficult to imagine when the Patriots selected him with the 199th pick: he can now make more money discussing the game than he did while playing it.
