Michael Irvin trolls Justin Herbert and fiancée Madison Beer after stunning loss

The Hall of Famer used Herbert’s relationship with Madison Beer to deliver a sharp postgame jab

J ustin Herbert ’s relationship with Madison Beer became part of the conversation for all the wrong reasons after the Los Angeles Chargers suffered another ugly defeat.

Michael Irvin wasted little time piling on after the Chargers lost 26-14 to the Las Vegas Raiders at SoFi Stadium, using Herbert’s offseason travels with Beer to mock the quarterback’s inability to consistently move Los Angeles’ offense.

“You made the wrong drive,” Irvin said in a video posted to Instagram. “Driving your girl to the airport, but you can’t drive this team to that endzone?! That’s a problem.”

Irvin ’s social media team added another jab in the caption: “Mike thinks Justin Herbert is focused on the wrong drive.”

Los Angeles entered 2026 expecting a significant offensive improvement under new coordinator Mike McDaniel . Instead, the Chargers are 0-2 and Herbert has already found himself under growing scrutiny.

Herbert’s numbers reflect offensive struggles

Herbert finished the Raiders game 15-of-27 for 192 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also fumbled three times as Las Vegas consistently disrupted the Chargers ’ rhythm and forced mistakes in key situations.

Through two games, Herbert has completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 401 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. His passer rating sits at 71.6, well below his career standards.

The Raiders added three sacks and nine quarterback hits, while rookie cornerback Hezekiah Masses intercepted Herbert twice. Los Angeles did not help its quarterback, either. False starts, protection issues and additional fumbles repeatedly stalled drives.

Irvin ’s criticism may have been delivered as a joke, but the broader concern around Herbert and the offense is becoming increasingly serious.

Analysts starting to question Los Angeles

Irvin wasn't the only former player to take aim at the Chargers after the loss. Will Compton admitted he had badly misjudged what McDaniel would bring to Los Angeles.

“The Chargers have been brutal,” Compton wrote.

Herbert ’s struggles have made him an obvious target because of his status as the franchise quarterback and the expectations that come with it.

His relationship with Beer has attracted attention away from football as well, particularly after the couple spent time traveling overseas during the offseason.

None of that has anything to do with the turnovers or protection problems on the field, but Irvin clearly saw an opportunity to connect the two.

The Chargers need Herbert to rediscover the form that made him one of the league’s most highly regarded young quarterbacks.

Until that happens, a winless start means every mistake, and every joke, is likely to receive even more attention.
