Fantasy Football Alert: Possible suspension of Puka Nacua on the Rams could be major problem

A potential suspension creates risk around the Rams receiver

Puka Nacua ’s fantasy value has become one of the trickiest calls of draft season, not because anything has changed about his talent, but because managers still don't know whether he will be available when the Los Angeles Rams open the NFL regular season.

Nacua is coming off a dominant year in which he led the NFL with 129 receptions, finished second with 1,715 receiving yards and scored 10 touchdowns. That production made him fantasy football’s No.1 wide receiver.

Normally, those numbers would make him an easy first-round selection. The complication is the possibility of NFL discipline stemming from several off-field matters that remain under review.

No suspension has been announced, but ESPN insider Adam Schefter made clear earlier this month that missing the opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia remains possible.

“[Nacua] could potentially face discipline for some of the offseason headlines that accompanied him,” Schefter said.

He added: “It’s possible that when the 49ers and Rams play in Australia, it’s within the realm of options that Puka doesn’t play in that game.”

That uncertainty should matter in fantasy drafts. It shouldn't, however, trigger a collapse in Nacua ’s value.

Short suspension would barely dent Nacua’s upside

Fantasy managers should separate the risk of a suspension from the severity of one.

If Nacua misses only Week 1, his season-long value remains extremely strong. Passing on a player capable of delivering 1,700 receiving yards because of a single absence could end up being an overreaction.

Even a two-game suspension wouldn't necessarily push him outside the first round. The calculation changes if the NFL announces something more significant.

A four-game absence would make Nacua much harder to justify among the top three or four overall selections, particularly when Ja’Marr Chase and other elite receivers offer similar ceilings without the same availability concern.

Until there is clarity, the safest approach is to move Nacua down a few spots rather than several rounds.

If he reaches the back half of Round 1, the value becomes much easier to defend. If nervous managers allow him to fall into Round 2, the risk may be worth embracing.

Fantasy managers should build around uncertainty

Anyone drafting Nacua should have a contingency plan. Using another early selection on a reliable wide receiver can protect against a short-term absence and prevent a roster from becoming too dependent on one player.

Davante Adams is another major weapon in the Rams offense, while Los Angeles’ decision to bring Tutu Atwell back has created further speculation about Nacua’s status. That move alone, though, isn't evidence that a suspension is imminent.

Nacua remains one of the most dangerous fantasy assets on the board. The smartest move is not to pretend the suspension risk does not exist. It is to price that risk correctly.

Until the NFL announces significant discipline, Nacua still belongs in the first-round conversation. If he slips much further, the uncertainty could turn into somebody else’s best draft-night bargain.
