De’Von Achane knee injury update: Dolphins RB says goodbye to the season in Week 3

The Miami Dolphins season suffered its hardest blow of the year so far after the worst medical fears were confirmed. Star running back De’Von Achane will miss the rest of the 2026 season due to a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. The news was confirmed by the franchise’s medical team this Monday morning, after MRI studies revealed the severity of the damage he suffered during Sunday’s game.

Achane was injured during the Dolphins' first offensive series , on an 11-yard run. The running back planted his left leg to make a cut before falling to the turf and then being brought down. He was able to leave the field under his own power, but he went through the medical tent and was later taken to the locker room.

Miami loses one of its main offensive weapons

After the 24-10 loss to Kansas City , coach Jeff Hafley avoided offering an early diagnosis, although he acknowledged that the initial news was not encouraging. "To be completely honest, right now it doesn't sound very optimistic", he explained while the team awaited additional tests on the knee.

Achane finished the game with three carries for 17 yards and left the game with 10:42 remaining in the first quarter. Before facing the Chiefs, he had totaled 110 rushing yards on 31 attempts through the first two games of the season.

Achane's absence is an additional problem for a Miami offense that has struggled to produce in the first three weeks. The Dolphins are averaging 12 points per game and will lose one of their main weapons both in the running game and in the passing game.

Miami had included Achane in their long-term plans. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan had described him as an important piece of the project and publicly ruled out the possibility of trading him. The running back agreed to a four-year extension during the spring.

The Dolphins will have to reorganize the backfield following Achane's injury. Jaylen Wright was unavailable against Kansas City due to foot issues and a stinger, so Ollie Gordon was the only running back available after Achane's exit.

The injury also comes at a difficult start for Miami. The Dolphins fell 24-10 to the Chiefs and dropped to 0-3. Their next game will be on the road against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, now without Achane available for the rest of the season.
