Dianna Russini turns to Hollywood crisis publicist for possible return to journalism after Mike Vrabel controversy
The former Athletic NFL insider has reportedly hired Melissa Nathan as she plans her return to journalism following the Mike Vrabel controversy

Dianna Russini is taking a step toward returning to sports media, although her next destination remains unclear. The former NFL insider has enlisted crisis publicist Melissa Nathan to help her move beyond the controversy involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, according to an October 8 report from Page Six citing a source familiar with the situation.
The reported move comes nearly six months after Russini resigned from The Athletic . For a journalist whose work depended on relationships and access across the NFL , the challenge now includes rebuilding public trust. Page Six’ s source said interest in her return remains, but Russini has not publicly announced a new position or a date for her comeback.
Dianna Russini’s comeback follows a newsroom standards violation
Russini left The Athletic in April after photographs surfaced showing her and Vrabel holding hands and embracing at an Arizona resort. Both initially disputed the implications of the images. Vrabel described their encounter as a “completely innocent interaction,” while Russini said the photographs lacked important context.
The Athletic subsequently reviewed her conduct and reporting. Its findings, released in September, concluded that her undisclosed personal connection with Vrabel violated newsroom standards. However, the publication did not establish the full nature of their relationship. That distinction matters: the review identified a disclosure failure without reaching a definitive conclusion about whether the relationship was romantic.
The review also examined her journalism. Editorial director Mike Semel found little evidence that the connection had affected her coverage of Vrabel or the teams he coached. Those findings do not erase the standards violation, but they separate concerns about transparency from claims that her reporting was broadly compromised.
Russini had spent years building her place in sports television and NFL reporting. She joined ESPN in 2015, appearing on programs including SportsCenter and NFL Live, before moving to The Athletic in August 2023. Her departure interrupted a career built around delivering information about players, coaches and decisions across the league.
Nathan brings experience managing publicity for prominent figures facing intense scrutiny. Page Six identifies Logan Paul, Johnny Depp and Justin Baldoni among the clients she has worked with . Hiring her suggests Russini is seeking help handling the attention surrounding her return, although neither woman has publicly outlined a strategy.
The choice carries its own complications. Nathan is involved in litigation with rival publicist Stephanie Jones over allegations concerning online smear campaigns connected to the Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively dispute. Nathan has denied wrongdoing. Those allegations remain contested.
Meanwhile, Vrabel has continued coaching the Patriots . He later acknowledged responsibility for his actions and the distraction surrounding the controversy, and sought counseling during the NFL Draft period. Russini’s professional future has remained less certain, with speculation about potential employers continuing through the opening weeks of the season.
Page Six previously reported that she was considering several opportunities and would not announce a decision before Week 1. Its latest report says the uncertainty is not due to a lack of interest. Still, no agreement with a new outlet has been publicly confirmed, and hiring a publicist does not itself establish where she will work next.
Until then, the reported partnership with Nathan is a sign that she is preparing for another chapter. Any return would bring renewed questions about disclosure and professional boundaries, alongside the question of whether an employer and its audience are ready to trust her reporting again.
