The Patriots guaranteed Christian Gonzalez $102 million and this play explains why

One sequence showed why intelligence and anticipation can be just as valuable as speed in the NFL

The New England Patriots did not guarantee Christian Gonzalez $102 million simply because he can run fast or cover elite receivers. One sequence against the Seattle Seahawks showed the intelligence, anticipation and leadership behind their enormous investment.

Before the ball was snapped, Gonzalez appeared to recognize what Seattle was preparing to do. The cornerback pointed across the secondary, directed his teammates and made sure everyone was correctly positioned to defend the play.

Seconds later, everything unfolded almost exactly as he had anticipated. Gonzalez remained disciplined in coverage, closed the throwing window and broke up the pass before the receiver could complete the catch.

A pass breakup appears as one simple number on an NFL stat sheet, but this play involved much more. Gonzalez first had to read the offensive formation, understand the route combination and communicate the necessary adjustment before the quarterback received the snap.

He then completed the job himself. His athleticism allowed him to stay with the receiver and reach the ball, but his football intelligence had already placed him in the correct position. Gonzalez did not recover after being beaten he prevented the opening from developing.

The sequence came during New England’s 13-10 season-opening loss to Seattle. Despite the result, Gonzalez remained one of the Patriots’ strongest defensive performers, allowing only two receptions on five targets and producing a crucial pass breakup.

The rest of his performance made that sequence even more impressive. Across 26 coverage snaps, Gonzalez was targeted only three times and did not allow a single reception or receiving yard. He also recorded two pass breakups and two tackles, completing a dominant opening-night performance that strengthened his claim as one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks.

Only days earlier, New England had signed Gonzalez to a four-year, $135 million contract extension containing $102 million guaranteed and a record $33 million signing bonus. The agreement made him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
