Dianna Russini appears ready to resume her career in NFL media, but the controversy that forced her departure from The Athletic could follow her into the next chapter of her professional life.

Seven months after resigning amid scrutiny of her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel , Russini is reportedly preparing to launch a new digital show featuring interviews with NFL players and coaches.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported on November 4 that the veteran journalist had begun informing contacts around the league of her intention to return the following week.

Page Six subsequently reported that Russini would be headlining the project, although neither its platform nor an official launch date has been publicly confirmed.

The development marks a potential fresh start for a reporter who previously built her reputation through exclusive NFL coverage at ESPN and The Athletic.

However, the circumstances surrounding her departure have created questions about whether she can restore the confidence of audiences and colleagues who once relied on her reporting.

Russini 's professional difficulties began in April when photographs emerged showing her and Vrabel holding hands and embracing at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona.

Both rejected suggestions of inappropriate conduct, maintaining that the photographs did not accurately represent the circumstances of their meeting.

"Those photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable," Vrabel told Page Six.

Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14, one week after the images became public, while continuing to defend the integrity of her journalism.

"I stand behind every story I have ever published," she wrote in her resignation statement.

However, The Athletic's subsequent investigation raised concerns that extended beyond the photographs themselves.

Mike Semel , who led the review, concluded that Russini had violated the publication's disclosure requirements concerning her relationship with Vrabel.

"Regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed," Semel wrote.

Investigators also questioned her initial handling of the controversy, finding that she delayed notifying editors and subsequently offered an account inconsistent with established facts.

Russini's new show could test NFL audiences

Importantly, The Athletic's investigation didn't establish that Russini had manipulated her reporting to benefit Vrabel or his teams.

The review examined 903 articles, 204 podcast episodes and 77 videos, finding no clear evidence of improper promotional coverage.

Nevertheless, Florio believes those findings present an obstacle if Russini intends to resume her career as an NFL reporter.

"If she'll be reporting again, she'll need to restore her own credibility," he wrote.

A format centered on interviews could offer Russini a different route back into sports media, allowing her to draw on established relationships without immediately returning to traditional breaking-news coverage.

Reports have also ruled out several possible destinations, including Barstool Sports, although the identity of her new platform remains undisclosed.

Her return may demonstrate that opportunities remain available, but whether audiences accept her journalism again will depend on what she produces and how she responds to the questions surrounding her departure.
