Odell Beckham Jr. unloads on Giants after stunning release

OBJ says New York blindsided him, while John Harbaugh insists the reunion simply never found a football role

O dell Beckham Jr.’ s second stint with the New York Giants was supposed to be a feel-good NFL reunion. Instead, it lasted three games and ended with the veteran receiver publicly questioning why the organization brought him back in the first place.

The Giants released Beckham last week after he played just 20 offensive snaps, saw one target and failed to record a catch during the opening three games of the 2026 season.

For a player who once became one of the NFL’s biggest stars in New York, the lack of involvement made the reunion increasingly difficult to justify from a football standpoint.

Beckham clearly saw the situation differently.

In an Instagram response, the 33-year-old receiver suggested that the Giants benefited from the attention surrounding his return while failing to give him a genuine opportunity on the field: “I’m super smart!!!! But I didn’t see this one, my brotha, They got me!!!”

He then pointed toward the financial side of his comeback and emphasized that he had accepted a veteran-minimum deal rather than demanding a major payday.

“They won on top of the money u talkin [about], I made them. I came in HUMBLY took vet min then EARNED my spot [and] didn’t say nothing bout no $$$ which I [know] make for everybody. Ima tell u this ima grown man and this [sh-t] didn’t hurt me but it did when they cut me like that cause part of me is like I shoulda known better,” he said.

Those comments paint a very different picture from the explanation offered by Giants coach John Harbaugh .

Harbaugh says Beckham never found a meaningful role

Harbaugh , who also coached Beckham during his time with the Baltimore Ravens , said the decision had little to do with personal issues and everything to do with the roster.

“We just weren’t getting enough. It just wasn’t working for us,” Harbaugh told reporters Wednesday. “I wanted to be able to give more; I wanted him to be able to do more. I wanted to get him on the field more.”

That explanation fits the numbers. Beckham made New York’s initial 53-man roster after returning to the franchise that drafted him 12th overall in 2014, but he quickly slipped behind Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney and rookie Malachi Fields in the receiving rotation.

He also did not contribute on special teams, making it harder for the Giants to justify keeping a veteran who wasn't receiving offensive opportunities.

The return was particularly strange because Beckham had such a significant history with the franchise.

From 2014 through 2018, he established himself as one of the most electric receivers in football. He earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections to begin his career and produced 5,476 receiving yards and 44 touchdowns in 59 games with New York.

His 92.8 receiving yards per game remains the highest mark in Giants history among players with at least 50 games.

His career later took him to Cleveland, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Miami. Beckham won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams and last played for the Dolphins in 2024 before missing the 2025 season.

That history made his return to New York one of the more intriguing stories of the offseason. But nostalgia could not manufacture a role within Harbaugh’s offense.

The Giants also made a practical roster move after cutting Beckham, signing Braxton Berrios to the active roster. Berrios had previously been limited by the number of practice-squad elevations available to the team.

For Beckham , however, the issue appears to go beyond playing time. His comments suggest he believed he had earned his opportunity and expected the Giants to give him a chance to contribute after accepting less money to return.

The question now is whether another team agrees.

Beckham remains a recognizable name with nearly 8,000 career receiving yards and 59 touchdowns, but his recent production has been limited. He recorded only nine catches for 55 yards with Miami in 2024 and did not play in the NFL last season.

That makes his next opportunity uncertain.

What is no longer uncertain is that the Giants reunion did not end the way Beckham envisioned. New York saw a roster spot that was not producing enough value. Beckham saw an opportunity he had earned and expected to receive.

Those two perspectives have now collided publicly, leaving one of the most recognizable players in franchise history looking for his next NFL destination.
