The Giants are considering a former two-time Super Bowl champion to address Jaxson Dart's absence

Giants may look beyond Jameis Winston for additional quarterback insurance

The New York Giants could turn to a familiar veteran presence as they deal with the sudden loss of Jaxson Dart .

Jimmy Garoppolo has emerged as a potential option for the Giants after Dart suffered a serious left knee injury in Monday night's 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The second-year quarterback will miss the remainder of the 2026 regular season after damaging his MCL, PCL and meniscus.

According to The Post's Ryan Dunleavy, New York has real interest in Garoppolo , while a league source indicated that the 34-year-old free agent could be near the top of the team's list. NFL Network has also reported that the Giants are among the few teams Garoppolo would consider joining.

The timing makes sense. Jameis Winston is now expected to take over as New York's starting quarterback, but his first extended appearance after Dart went down wasn't encouraging. Winston completed just 11 of 27 attempts for 111 yards and an interception against the Rams.

New York did recently give Winston a two-year, $13 million extension, showing the organization had confidence in him as a backup.

However, Jake Haener is currently behind him on the depth chart, leaving the Giants with limited experience if Winston also becomes unavailable.

Garoppolo would bring experience, but questions remain

Garoppolo offers something the Giants' current depth chart doesn’t, and that is extensive experience in meaningful NFL games. He has started 64 regular-season games during his career and guided the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl LIV during the 2019 season, where they eventually lost 31-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

His recent playing history, however, is limited. Garoppolo spent the past two seasons backing up Matthew Stafford with the Rams.

He appeared in only four games across those seasons and made one start in 2024, completing 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He didn't throw a pass in his three appearances last season.

That lack of recent action means signing Garoppolo wouldn't come without uncertainty. Still, the Giants appear interested in adding another experienced quarterback to provide insurance behind Winston.

“This is what I've always dreamed of, to be a starting quarterback,” Winston told reporters Wednesday. “Obviously, my respects and gratitude is just going to be with Jaxson, but at the same time, this is what I dream of. I dream of being what I am right now and executing at a high level.”

Head coach John Harbaugh has indicated that the team is considering its options, saying all possibilities remain open at the position. In the meantime Winston will get the opportunity to establish himself as Dart's replacement, beginning Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

But with Dart sidelined for the regular season, the Giants are clearly examining whether they need more insurance.
