Jason Kelce rejects opportunity to coach the Eagles: Reason behind his refusal

Philadelphia's protection problems have raised questions about the coaching staff

The solution to the Philadelphia Eagles ' offensive line problems might appear obvious to supporters who spent more than a decade watching Jason Kelce dominate in the trenches. However, the franchise legend believes returning to Philadelphia as a coach would be the wrong decision.

The Eagles have struggled to establish consistency along their offensive line this season, with injuries to three starters during the opening weeks placing additional pressure on quarterback Jalen Hurts and the running game.

Those difficulties have intensified scrutiny of new offensive line coach Chris Kuper , who inherited the position after Jeff Stoutland departed following 13 seasons with the organization.

Kelce has continued visiting the team since retiring in 2024, but when asked whether he could take on a more significant coaching role, the former center explained why that possibility remains unlikely.

Speaking on SportsRadio 94WIP, Kelce revealed that he had spent time with Philadelphia's offensive linemen during training camp, learning the system and offering guidance.

"I was there in training camp a little bit and learning the offense a little bit and trying to help those guys," Kelce said.

He acknowledged that former players can provide useful insight, particularly when they have spent years performing the same responsibilities at the highest level.

However, Kelce was reluctant to suggest that his decorated playing career automatically qualified him to become an NFL coach.

"I think that there's probably people that are far more experienced and knowledgeable than I am," he admitted.

His explanation ultimately centered on two issues, those being a demanding personal schedule, and the availability of experienced offensive line coaches better equipped for the position.

"The reality is one, I don't have the time to do that," Kelce said.

He emphasized that he would continue offering occasional assistance, but could not commit the hours necessary to make a meaningful contribution every week.

Stoutland influence shapes Kelce's view

Kelce understands the importance of specialist coaching after spending much of his career working under Stoutland, who helped develop one of the NFL's most respected offensive lines.

During his retirement speech, Kelce delivered an emotional tribute to his former coach.

"No one has been more influential or meaningful to my success on the field in my career than Stout," he said.

That experience helped Kelce appreciate the preparation, teaching and personal investment required to coach professional players.

Although he has previously expressed interest in coaching high-school football, Kelce has consistently acknowledged that NFL responsibilities would demand more time than he is prepared to sacrifice.

Family and ESPN career remain priorities

Since leaving the Eagles , Kelce has built a prominent media career, joining ESPN's Monday Night Countdown and continuing his successful New Heights podcast with brother Travis Kelce .

He also shares four daughters with his wife, Kylie Kelce , and has repeatedly emphasized the importance of spending time with his family.

"I would love to coach," Kelce previously said. "The problem with coaching is the time, huge time commitment."

Kelce 's decision doesn't mean he has distanced himself from Philadelphia. His willingness to visit practices and advise players demonstrates that his connection to the organization remains strong.

However, the responsibility for fixing the Eagles ' offensive line ultimately rests with Kuper and the current coaching staff, rather than a franchise legend enjoying life after football.
