It's the team you supported as a child

Rodgers explained after the game why he considered his coach’s victory special. McCarthy was not only opening his win column with the Steelers . He was doing it with the team he had followed since he was a child.

«Mike has won many times, but it is always special when it is the first time in a place, and even more special when it is with the team you have supported since you were a child», Rodgers said.

The quarterback also recalled that McCarthy 's parents still live in the area. For the coach, returning to Pittsburgh to lead the Steelers represented a direct link to his personal history.

McCarthy received the ball and was grateful for both Rodgers' recognition and that of his players. “First team ball, first win, so obviously a special moment”, said the coach, before insisting that the team now had to focus on the next objective.

A victory built from defense

The result was positive for Pittsburgh, although the offense struggled for much of the game. Rodgers completed 24 of 40 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown in his first official game of the season.

The defense kept the team afloat in the decisive moments. T.J. Watt was the star with two sacks and an interception returned 35 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers thus left with a 1-0 record and McCarthy with his first game ball for a win as the franchise's head coach. Rodgers, one of the players who knows the coach best, was the one in charge of handing it to him.
