Mike McCarthy faces another ordeal at Steelers press conference caused by reporter's cell phone
The new Pittsburgh coach found plenty to fix after young quarterbacks struggled against New York

M ike McCarthy ’s frustration was already visible before a ringing phone cut through his postgame press conference.
After watching the Pittsburgh Steelers struggle through a lifeless offensive performance against the New York Jets , the new head coach had little interest in dealing with any additional distractions.
The Steelers were shut out 17-0 at Acrisure Stadium on Friday night, leaving McCarthy with plenty of concerns to address. While explaining where his offense fell short, a reporter’s cell phone interrupted the room, prompting an immediate response from the veteran coach.
“Please, shut that thing off. I mean, my goodness,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy quickly moved on, but the moment captured the mood around Pittsburgh after a night where the offense failed to build on the promise shown in the team’s opening preseason game.
The Steelers had previously impressed in a 28-9 win over the Green Bay Packers , but the performance against New York was a significant step backward.
With Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph rested, Pittsburgh turned to young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar , but neither was able to consistently challenge the Jets defense.
Howard started the game and completed 10 of 15 passes for 74 yards, but two interceptions in the first half ended promising drives. Allar entered later and finished 11 of 23 for 110 yards while being sacked three times.
“There will definitely be more to clean up this week than last week,” McCarthy said. “That’s the reality of tonight.”
The Steelers ’ offense struggled across the board, finishing with only 98 rushing yards on 26 attempts.
Running back Kaleb Johnson received an extended opportunity, recording 39 yards on 10 carries, but Pittsburgh was unable to establish enough balance to support its young quarterbacks.
McCarthy pointed to missed opportunities in the passing game, including a lack of separation from receivers and an inability to win contested catches.
“We failed to make contested catches,” McCarthy said.
The new Steelers coach believes the difficult outing can still provide value as the team prepares for the regular season.
“We will have great ‘teaching film,’” McCarthy added. “We’re a staff that loves to teach.”
Learning experience for Pittsburgh’s young quarterbacks
The loss provided a reminder that preseason development rarely follows a straight line.
Howard and Allar both showed flashes in previous appearances, but the Jets exposed areas where Pittsburgh’s young quarterbacks still need refinement. Howard acknowledged that the key now is avoiding repeated mistakes.
“The biggest thing is getting to the film and not letting these mistakes fester and not letting one or two mistakes turn into more,” Howard said.
With Rodgers expected to take control of the offense once the regular season begins, the preseason remains focused on evaluating depth and identifying which young players can contribute.
McCarthy ’s staff now has plenty of film to analyze before the Steelers ’ final preseason matchup against the Buffalo Bills .
McCarthy ’s reaction to the phone interruption may have been the most memorable moment of the night, but the real issue facing Pittsburgh is much bigger.
The offense must find consistency before the games start counting. After an impressive opening performance and a frustrating follow-up, McCarthy knows exactly what his team needs next, and that is improvement.
