George Kittle's return to the 49ers ten months later thrills his wife Claire, who sends him a touching message
After months of rehabilitation following a devastating Achilles injury, George Kittle finally returned to the field for San Francisco

G eorge Kittle 's long-awaited return to the San Francisco 49ers has given his family plenty to celebrate, and few were happier to see the star tight end back on an NFL field than his wife, Claire Kittle .
Kittle made his regular-season comeback against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, nearly eight months after suffering a torn Achilles during San Francisco's playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in January.
The 49ers ultimately cruised to a 27-7 victory in the historic first regular-season NFL game played in Australia.
Kittle's individual numbers were modest, as he finished with two catches for 12 yards on five targets, but his presence alone represented a major milestone after an arduous rehabilitation process.
Claire was there to experience the moment in person.
Before kickoff at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Kittle met his parents, Bruce and Jan, near the sideline before sharing a kiss with Claire. The touching family moment was captured by the NFL and subsequently shared by Claire on her Instagram Story.
Her message was brief but captured exactly what the return meant to her: “So proud of him.”
Claire followed that up with another enthusiastic post celebrating her husband's return, writing: “You’re a fu*kin dawg @gkittle HES BACK.”
The reaction was the latest chapter in a story that has involved considerable emotion for the Kittle family since January.
George Kittle's Achilles injury made his return especially remarkable
Kittle suffered the Achilles injury on January 11 during the 49ers' NFC wild-card win over the Eagles . He was carted from the field, ending his season and immediately leaving his availability for the following campaign in serious doubt.
The tight end's recovery subsequently became one of the more closely followed rehabilitation stories around the 49ers .
By August, Kittle had been activated from the physically unable to perform list and returned to practice. The 49ers noted that he was back on the field less than eight months after suffering the injury, putting him on an unusually accelerated timeline for an Achilles recovery.
Offensive lineman Colton McKivitz praised the determination behind that comeback, describing Kittle's return as “incredible” and highlighting how badly the veteran wanted to play again.
Claire had already made clear just how difficult the original injury had been for the family. Following the January incident, she described the shock of seeing her husband go down and be taken away from the field.
“Disbelief and stillness were all I felt as I yelled, get up, get up, over and over again. He always gets up. He’s George, he can do all things. He just does it. It hurts. There’s no preparing for it,” she posted at the time.
Her support continued throughout the rehabilitation process.
When the 49ers officially activated Kittle from the PUP list in August, Claire celebrated again, calling him “a unicorn.” That followed months of encouragement as he worked toward getting back into football shape.
Kittle's own comments showed how much the return meant to him. After the victory over the Rams, he reflected on the contrast between his last appearance and his return to Week 1.
“I mean, personally, it means the absolute world because last time I played football, I left on a cart; to be back for Week 1 means the world to my family and me. To be out there for the boys as a team. What an atmosphere.”
That comeback also matters to the 49ers because Kittle remains one of the central pieces of their offense. The seven-time Pro Bowler entered the 2026 campaign with 595 career receptions, 8,008 receiving yards and 52 touchdowns, numbers that underline his importance to quarterback Brock Purdy and San Francisco 's offensive identity.
His influence extends beyond the statistics, too. Christian McCaffrey recently emphasized the energy Kittle brings simply by being on the field.
“When 85 is on the field, when he’s in the shoulder pads and a helmet, everyone on the team feels it,” McCaffrey said.
That impact was visible in Melbourne, even though the 49ers managed Kittle's workload carefully.
For Claire, however, the significance went far beyond what appeared on the box score. She had watched her husband leave a playoff game on a cart in January and then endure months of rehabilitation. Seeing him walk onto the field again alongside his family was the culmination of that journey.
Kittle's return may have been limited in terms of snaps and production, but it represented something much bigger for the 49ers star and those closest to him.
And Claire's emotional message made it clear that, after everything the couple had been through since January, simply seeing George Kittle back where he belongs was more than enough reason to celebrate.
