Still the 'GOAT'? Pundits defend Brock Purdy even after 49ers fall to Falcons

Two interceptions contributed to San Francisco's first loss, but the quarterback's career numbers tell a different story

The San Francisco 49ers finally looked vulnerable on Sunday, but their first defeat of the season hasn't erased the statistical achievement that continues to set Brock Purdy apart from the NFL's biggest quarterback names.

San Francisco's 29-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons ended its unbeaten run, with Purdy throwing two interceptions during an afternoon marked by injuries, offensive mistakes and missed opportunities.

Yet the 49ers quarterback remains first in NFL history in career passer rating at 104.8, according to figures highlighted by journalist Tim Kawakami following the game.

That mark places Purdy ahead of Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson , providing an interesting counterpoint to criticism of his performance.

The challenge now is determining whether Sunday's mistakes represent an isolated setback or evidence that San Francisco's growing injury problems are beginning to affect its quarterback.

Purdy completed a season-high number of passes but finished with 288 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, recording his lowest passer rating of the campaign at 75.8.

His first interception came late in the third quarter when he rolled right and attempted a difficult throw toward the sideline. Falcons safety Jessie Bates III anticipated the pass and made an athletic catch.

The second turnover was particularly damaging. Rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels initially disguised his coverage assignment before dropping back and intercepting Purdy , effectively ending San Francisco's hopes of a comeback.

Those mistakes were part of a broader problem for the 49ers , who committed four turnovers and repeatedly undermined promising offensive possessions.

Injuries also limited Purdy 's options, with Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans unavailable. Tight end George Kittle became his most dependable receiver, finishing with eight catches for 88 yards.

Running back Christian McCaffrey provided early offensive momentum but was slowed by a thigh injury, further reducing San Francisco's ability to sustain drives.

Purdy remains central to 49ers' Super Bowl hopes

Purdy 's struggles have coincided with increasing pressure from opposing defenses, making the injuries around him particularly significant.

His pressure rate climbed from 25.6% over the opening three weeks to 32.6% across the following four games. All seven of his sacks this season have also come during the past three contests.

Those numbers suggest San Francisco's offensive difficulties extend beyond its quarterback, although Purdy must still take responsibility for decisions that put the ball at risk.

The 49ers now have a timely opportunity to regroup, with their Week 8 bye providing additional recovery time before a November 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders .

Getting key offensive contributors healthy will be important, particularly as San Francisco attempts to prevent Sunday's defeat from developing into a longer downturn.

Purdy 's place atop the all-time passer rating rankings doesn't make him the NFL's greatest quarterback, especially when championships, longevity and postseason performances remain central to that discussion.

It does, however, underline how consistently productive he has been since entering the league. One disappointing afternoon against Atlanta is unlikely to change that assessment.
