Blockbuster Deal: Seahawks acquire Quenton Nelson as Colts fire sale begins

Seattle strengthens its offensive line just days after demolishing the Kansas City Chiefs

The Seattle Seahawks have acquired the Colts guard Quenton Nelson in a deal that could signal a broader roster shake-up in the AFC South as Indianapolis looks to head into a rebuild period. Seattle will send a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round selection to land the eight-time Pro Bowl lineman as the 30-year-old Nelson has been a cornerstone of the offensive line since Indianapolis selected him sixth overall in the 2018 NFL Draft .

But he is playing the final season of a four-year, $80 million contract extension and the Colts have opted to cash in as the trade comes eight days after owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon dismissed general manager Chris Ballard . With Indianapolis sitting at 2-5 following Sunday's defeat to the Minnesota Vikings , the franchise now faces questions about its direction as the November 10 trade deadline approaches. But for Seattle , the acquisition addresses an offensive line that has struggled to consistently protect quarterback Sam Darnold as through seven games, the Seahawks had allowed 16 sacks and recorded a quarterback pressure rate of 38.4%. And the move also follows a 20-3 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night in which Darnold completed 20 of 28 passes for 257 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a positive performance. Emanuel Wilson became the team's first player to rush for 100 yards in a game this season and star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba was another standout, recording nine catches for 150 yards and a touchdown as the Seahawks looked to defend their Super Bowl title. JSN has now accumulated 867 receiving yards and eight touchdowns through seven games, establishing himself as one of the league's most dangerous offensive players and with his quarterback receiving extra protection from Nelson , Smith-Njigba should only become more potent.

Could Jonathan Taylor be next out of Indianapolis?

Nelson 's departure could be the first major move in a wider Colts rebuild as running back Jonathan Taylor and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner have emerged as potential trade candidates as Indianapolis considers its options after Ballard 's dismissal and a disappointing start to the season. Taylor remains productive despite the team's struggles as he has recorded 492 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 122 carries across six games, numbers that could attract contenders looking to strengthen their backfields before the postseason. The Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals have reportedly drawn attention as possible destinations for Taylor , although no agreement has been confirmed as Seattle ’s backfield situation could make an established runner appealing. Indianapolis has not publicly committed to a full-scale rebuild, and speculation about potential trades does not guarantee further departures. However, the latest move raises the possibility that more established players could leave before the deadline with the Chiefs also linked to wide receiver Josh Downs .
