Jay-Z left scrambling for Super Bowl headliner after Macklemore pro-Palestine controversy
The fallout from Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian remarks has reportedly complicated plans for the NFL’s biggest musical event

Jay-Z is reportedly facing an unexpected challenge as plans for the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show enter a crucial stage, with the fallout from Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian remarks adding another layer of sensitivity around the event.
The NFL and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation have yet to announce the performer for Super Bowl LXI, which will be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on February 14, 2027.
A report citing a source familiar with the discussions claims organizers are struggling to secure a headliner, raising the possibility that Jay-Z could take the stage himself alongside several guest artists. The claim hasn’t been confirmed by the NFL or Roc Nation.
Jay-Z has helped oversee the halftime lineup since Roc Nation became involved with the NFL in 2019, but he hasn’t performed in the slot himself. His potential involvement comes as artists face increased scrutiny over the political dimensions of major live events.
Macklemore fallout adds pressure
The latest concerns follow Macklemore’s removal from Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour after the rapper made pro-Palestinian comments during a September 4 performance at MetLife Stadium.
According to reports, stadium owners raised concerns about hosting Macklemore following his remarks, ultimately leading to his departure from the remaining dates.
Sheeran later said the decision to remove Macklemore wasn’t his, while explaining that he prefers to keep politics away from his professional platform. He said his shows are intended to bring together audiences from different backgrounds rather than serve as political forums.
The controversy escalated when the other scheduled support acts - Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga - also withdrew from the remaining concerts. Macklemore has since announced plans to donate $1 million in net earnings from the tour to organizations providing aid to Palestinians.
The dispute has also produced a notable shift in the secondary ticket market. TicketData reported that the cheapest resale ticket for Macklemore’s October concert at Red Rocks in Colorado climbed from $108 to $157 over three days, representing a 45% increase.
The company attributed the unusual surge to the events surrounding his removal from Sheeran’s tour.
Meanwhile, resale prices for nine of Sheeran’s 10 remaining venues declined. TicketData cautioned, however, that falling prices are common as concert dates approach, meaning the changes can’t automatically be linked to the controversy.
The episode could make potential performers more cautious about accepting one of entertainment’s biggest stages. The Super Bowl halftime show is unpaid, according to reporting, meaning artists may weigh the enormous exposure against the possibility of political controversy and intense public scrutiny.
The halftime performance has increasingly become a major cultural moment beyond music, placing its headliner under enormous attention. Recent shows featuring artists including Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar have generated extensive discussion, adding to the pressure surrounding whoever accepts the 2027 invitation.
With an announcement reportedly targeted for the end of September, the headliner search could remain unresolved for several more weeks.
