Baker Mayfield injury update: Todd Bowles provides more details on his thumb injury

B aker Mayfield left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ' loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, September 27 with a dislocated right thumb, leaving the quarterback's status uncertain as the team prepares for Week 4.

Mayfield suffered the injury late in Sunday's 23-16 defeat when his throwing hand struck Vikings linebacker Blake Cashman whilst he attempted a pass under pressure as the ball was intercepted by Andrew Van Ginkel .

Mayfield immediately went down holding his hand before eventually leaving the game, the Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowle s confirmed after the game that he had dislocated his right thumb, although Initial X-rays did not reveal a fracture.

Still, an MRI is scheduled for Monday to determine the extent of the injury after the incident came on 31-year-old's final play of the afternoon, forcing rookie Jalon Daniels onto the field for Tampa Bay 's last possession.

Daniels attempted three passes, including an interception on the final play, as the Buccaneers ' comeback hopes disappeared. Mayfield finished 17-of-34 for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception before leaving.

Buccaneers face uncertainty after another frustrating loss

The injury overshadowed another difficult offensive performance from Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers struggled throughout the afternoon against a Minnesota defense that repeatedly pressured Mayfield and prevented the offense from sustaining drives.

Tampa Bay did produce several opportunities, but penalties and stalled possessions repeatedly prevented the team from turning them into touchdowns whilst their veteran quarterback also took six sacks before his departure.

Mayfield 's potential absence would leave Daniels in line for an expanded role after the undrafted quarterback replaced him against Minnesota . Veteran Easton Stick is currently on Tampa Bay 's practice squad.

Tampa Bay will host the Green Bay Packers in Week 4, but Mayfield 's availability will depend on what the MRI reveals. Bowles ' confirmation of the dislocation provides the first clear indication of the injury, while the imaging will determine whether the quarterback can return quickly or faces an extended absence.

The Buccaneers also lost wide receiver Jalen McMillan to a left knee injury, with an MRI expected to provide further information. Tampa Bay therefore enters the new week dealing with multiple injury concerns while searching for its first victory of the season.
