On October 2, Lyle Odelein died at age 58 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania , the city where he had built his life after retiring from hockey. His death came as a shock to the NHL community, as it was unexpected and there had been no recent public reports of a terminal illness.

What did Lyle Odelein die from?

According to reports, Odelein suffered a sudden heart attack . His death brings an end to a 16-season NHL career that included 1,056 regular-season games , a Stanley Cup won with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993, and a special place in Columbus Blue Jackets history after becoming the franchise’s first captain during its inaugural season in 2000. He also accumulated 2,316 penalty minutes, a figure that reflects the physical style that defined much of his career.

Had he previously experienced any major health issues?

Yes. Years before his death, Odelein faced a medical emergency that put his life at serious risk. In March 2018, while playing golf in Arizona, he accidentally injured himself on a cactus . The wound eventually led to a severe bloodstream infection that reached his heart.

The infection destroyed his aortic valve and caused kidney and liver failure. Given the severity of his condition, doctors at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh performed an almost 24-hour procedure to replace his aortic valve and transplant a liver and a kidney.

After that difficult episode, Odelein managed to recover and continue with his life, even returning to the places that had defined his career in hockey.
