iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro? These are the new features

There’s no doubt that Apple has spent years redefining the way we use our devices, and its latest iPhones are once again putting a comparison on the table for many users. With the arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro, one question almost asks itself: how much has changed compared to the iPhone 17 Pro, and what has stayed exactly the same?
At a glance, not that much has changed
If the first thing you want to know is whether you’ll be holding a completely different phone, the answer comes down to the design. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps practically the same dimensions as the iPhone 17 Pro and retains its 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display.
It also keeps ProMotion at 120Hz, Always-On Display, up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, Ceramic Shield 2, USB-C 3.2 at 10Gbps, Camera Control and the Action Button. In other words, Apple chose to keep many of the features users already know, so the biggest difference between the two isn’t a completely redesigned look .
What about the camera? Is it the same or has it actually changed?
This is probably one of the first things you’ll want to know before buying a new phone. And this is where there’s a difference worth taking a closer look at.
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a 48MP main camera with a physical variable aperture , a feature that wasn’t available on the iPhone 17 Pro. In simple terms, the lens can physically adjust how much light enters and change the depth of field, rather than relying solely on software processing.
The new model also adds manual histogram controls, improved white balance and more precise focus controls. So if the camera is one of the reasons you’re considering upgrading, this is one area where you’ll find a clear difference between generations.
What you can’t see has changed too
Now comes a less obvious, but important, part of the comparison. The iPhone 18 Pro comes with the new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process, while the iPhone 17 Pro uses the A19 Pro .
RAM also gets a boost, going from 8GB to 12GB. That’s especially relevant for AI features that can run directly on the device, so the upgrade isn’t just about having a bigger number, but about what the phone can handle internally.
And what about battery life? There are changes here too
Battery life is another one of those details you’ll probably check before pulling out your credit card. The iPhone 18 Pro improves battery performance thanks to internal changes to its design and cooling system, while the new generation also increases wired charging speeds.
The model supports up to 60W, compared with 45W on the previous generation, and can reach around 50% battery in 15 minutes. That’s a difference that can be especially noticeable for anyone who regularly has very little time to charge their phone.
