Diego Sánchez, the UFC veteran, arrested again: the charge that could seriously complicate his probation
The former fighter was arrested for drunk driving and violating his probation for illegal weapons possession.

Diego Sánchez , one of the most recognizable names from the first generation of UFC stars, was once again involved in a legal issue. The former fighter was arrested on Monday, September 7 in Socorro County, New Mexico, accused of aggravated driving while intoxicated (aggravated DWI) and of violating the terms of his probation.
The 44-year-old MMA veteran was booked into the Socorro County jail after authorities intervened following an incident at a gas station, according to court records obtained by Albuquerque local news outlet KOB 4 in a preliminary report.
A new problem for Sánchez
In July 2025, Sánchez had been arrested in Albuquerque after police investigated a report of a gun fired from a vehicle near Interstate 40. Diego ultimately pleaded guilty to a fourth-degree charge of shooting from or at a vehicle. As part of the plea agreement, another charge related to the negligent use of a deadly weapon was dismissed.
Later, in March of this year, a judge sentenced him to five years of probation and 800 hours of community service , which would allow him to avoid serving prison time, as had been requested by prosecutors. As part of the conditions of his probation, the former fighter was required to refrain from consuming alcohol.
The new arrest comes just a few months after a judge imposed this sentence and could have additional consequences for Sanchez. Records list among the charges against him a felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol and a probation violation.
The allegations do not constitute a conviction, and Sanchez retains his right to the presumption of innocence while the case proceeds.
A career marked by great fights
Diego Sánchez rose to prominence in 2005 by winning the middleweight tournament in the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, a competition that propelled his arrival in the UFC.
The legendary and historic American Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter, popularly known by his nickname "The Nightmare" , was one of the figures who helped popularize the UFC during its expansion phase.
He is a member of the UFC Hall of Fame (in the fight wing) thanks to his legendary battle against Clay Guida in 2009. Throughout his career, he earned multiple recognitions for delivering the most exciting fights on the cards. His professional record stood at 30 wins and 14 losses.
After leaving the UFC, Sánchez continued competing on other stages. In 2022 he faced Kevin Lee in Eagle FC and later ventured into bare-knuckle, where he fought former world boxing champion Austin Trout in 2023.
Now, the former The Ultimate Fighter champion faces a new legal chapter that could seriously complicate his situation because it occurred while he was under judicial supervision.
