J.R. Smith’s arrest is caught on bodycam as an officer accuses LeBron James of “theft”: “That was all him”
A conversation about championship rings turned into a police officer’s complaint about LeBron James

The bodycam footage captures a strange pause in a serious traffic stop. J.R. Smith was talking with Royse City officers about his NBA career when one of them brought up LeBron James . The officer called him “He who shall not be named.” Smith asked, “Not a fan?” The reply: “He stole Luka from us. That was all him.”
The comment was about the 2025 trade that sent Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers . The officer’s “theft” remark was a fan’s grievance about the deal, not a formal accusation. Reporting at the time said James was stunned by the trade; he later said he spent two days in disbelief.
The conversation unfolded during Smith’s arrest
The stop took place Sept. 28 on Interstate 30 in Royse City, Texas. Police pulled over the vehicle after a license plate alert flagged an outstanding warrant.
While officers checked Smith’s information, the conversation turned to his NBA career and his two championships with Cleveland in 2016 and the Lakers in 2020, both alongside James.
Officers then confirmed the warrant and arrested him. The footage became public Nov. 3; the arrest itself was not new.
The warrant was tied to a charge of assault causing bodily injury involving family violence, stemming from an alleged Sept. 18 incident. Smith was released on a $5,000 bond the following day. A judge also signed an emergency protective order restricting contact with the woman involved.
Smith’s attorney, Justin A. Moore, said Smith is presumed innocent and that the case would be addressed in court.
After 16 seasons in the NBA , the former guard pursued a different path: he enrolled at North Carolina A&T, joined its men’s golf team and earned a degree in liberal studies in 2025.
The footage lasts only a few seconds , but the allegation behind the arrest concerns real people and carries consequences far beyond what a bodycam can show.
The case remains unresolved. Smith is presumed innocent , and his attorney says it will be addressed in court; the privacy of everyone involved deserves respect.
Although the officer is still angry with LeBron James and believes he was the one to blame.
