Everyone knows that football was invented by the English, but when people ask about the origin of basketball, there is more doubt about it. Well, it was James Naismith , a simple physical education teacher, who made it possible for thousands of athletes to practice, a century later, the sport he created.

And Naismith not only limited himself to shaping it, but much of the interpretation of the game is his . It was he himself who wrote the original rules of basketball. He launched the University of Kansas basketball program and succeeded in making basketball an official sport at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.

James Naismith and the origin of the idea of basketball: “It was not an accident”

The truth is that Naismith's invention came about as a result of the weather. All the young students played baseball or American football in the summer and spring. However, with the arrival of winter, they had to take shelter inside the facilities, limiting many of the advantages of these sports. That is how Naismith came up with the idea of shaping basketball.

“The invention of basketball was not an accident. It was developed to meet a need. Those boys simply did not want to play "drop the handkerchief,” were the explanations provided by Naismith himself, recorded in his testimonies from the time. The very creator of this sport loved what he had been able to bring into being.

“I am sure that no man can derive more pleasure from money or power than I do when I see a pair of basketball hoops anywhere far away” , was one of his quotes that has gone down in history. Nowadays, basketball can be played by more than 600 million people around the world.
