Michael Jordan's unusual McDonald's breakfast that made him the NBA's best: A few dollars' worth of calories

Jordan embodied the pinnacle of athletic performance but still had a craving for a Sausage McMuffin

Michael Jordan 's legendary career rested on extraordinary talent, competitiveness and preparation - yet his reported breakfast was surprisingly ordinary: a Sausage McMuffin from McDonald's . Not the carefully balanced meal expected of an elite athlete, the former Bulls teammate Stacey King shared the detail during a broadcast in January 2022 whilst Charles Oakley later appeared to confirm it, recalling Jordan 's regular McDonald's breakfasts.

"We ate a lot of McDonald's back then," Oakley said to the All the Smoke podcast. "MJ ate McDonald's every morning for breakfast. [H]e'd eat steak before every game." That recollection contrasted with the nutrition plan described by trainer Tim Grover as in a 1996 Chicago Tribune interview, he described breakfast as oatmeal with mixed fruit, scrambled egg whites and orange juice. The meal was intended to provide sustained energy, support Jordan 's metabolism and prevent unwanted weight gain as Grover warned that a large breakfast followed by no food until mid-afternoon could cause energy levels to rise and then crash. That fluctuation, he explained, could affect Jordan 's mood and activity during practice, something the Bulls did not need as they chased down championships with MJ as the star of the show. Jordan 's routine included his biggest meal at breakfast, a mid-morning protein shake, lunch and another shake whilst dinner was generally light - although game nights meant a larger evening meal and something small after the game. Lunch featured lean protein, such as chicken breast or hamburger, with whole-grain pasta or a baked potato and green salad. His shakes combined Gatorade, protein powder and fresh fruit, while dinner was less restrictive.

Six championships and a career built on sustained excellence

The results left no doubt to the value of his methods as Jordan won six NBA championships with Chicago in six attempts appearances, earning Finals MVP each time. Selected third overall in 1984 after helping North Carolina win the 1982 NCAA title. Jordan averaged 28.2 points as a rookie and won Rookie of the Year and his honors included five regular-season MVP awards, ten scoring titles and nine All-Defensive First Team selections. His 30.1-point career average remains the highest in NBA regular-season history; he also averaged approximately 33.5 points in the playoffs and has talent wasn’t limited to basketball either. After Chicago 's first three-peat, Jordan retired to pursue professional baseball. He returned in March 1995 and helped the Bulls win three more consecutive championships from 1996 to 1998, completing two separate title runs. A 38-year-old Jordan returned again in 2001 to play for Washington , averaging 20 points per game in his first Wizards season as his achievements across three decades cemented his reputation as one of basketball's greatest competitors, with his diet a key component.
