C aitlin Clark’s new multiyear deal with DICK’S Sporting Goods and Foot Locker brings her back to a place she remembers from childhood. The Indiana Fever star said DICK’S was a regular stop before each sports season when she was growing up. Now, she is the first athlete to become a brand partner for either retailer.

Clark called the partnership a “full-circle moment” and pointed to both retailers’ ties to sports, basketball and sneaker culture. DICK’S was part of her own experience as a young athlete, and now the brands plan to work with her to connect more young people with sports.

The focus on the next generation is central to how DICK’S describes the deal. The company’s chief marketing officer said Clark has inspired countless girls and boys to play the sports they love and stay involved. She added that DICK’S believes sports can build confidence, create opportunity and change lives.

That intention will take shape through national and global campaigns, fan activations, appearances, community programming and in-store and digital experiences. The partners also plan custom promotions for Clark’s signature footwear, apparel and other products . The announcement does not yet specify which community programs will involve Clark or when they will take place.

That product promotion includes the Nike Caitlin 1, Clark’s first signature basketball shoe, and its apparel collection. Nike launched the collection globally on Oct. 1. DICK’S and Foot Locker give the line additional retail platforms, while Nike remains the brand behind the shoe.

The business side is clear: Clark will help two major retailers reach sports fans and promote her signature products. But the personal story behind the deal is also part of its appeal.

Clark remembers being the young athlete walking into DICK’S before a new season; the partnership now gives her a platform to encourage other girls to find their place in sports.

DICK’S says it and its foundation have donated millions of dollars to support under-resourced teams and athletes through its Sports Matter program and other community initiatives.

The company has not said whether those programs will be part of Clark’s partnership. It also has not disclosed the deal’s financial terms or a schedule for campaigns and appearances.

There’s no doubt that Caitlin Clark and the brands she partners with look for ways to encourage girls to play sports. The business side is still there, but these partnerships also have a clear purpose and meaning.
