Some phrases outlive those who said them and continue to circulate decades later, especially when they touch on a subject as sensitive as money. That is the case with this quote by Margaret Thatcher , which is still shared today in debates about savings, taxes, and pensions.

The former British prime minister said it on May 23, 1983, in a speech in Cardiff, in the middle of the campaign for that year's general election . Her aim was to attack the Labour Party's platform, which proposed expanding nationalizations and creating a national investment bank.

His reflection was related to a criticism of the Labour plans

Thatcher accused Labour of having its sights set on Britons' pension plans and life insurance. According to her argument, a Labour government would force those funds to invest savers' money in its own projects. She also recalled that more than 11 million people were enrolled in company pension plans.

To illustrate it, she strung together a series of examples: if citizens kept their savings in the bank, they would nationalize it; if they put them into a pension fund, they would use it for their socialist plans. And she capped it off with the image that has gone down in history : if they hid them in a sock, they would nationalize socks.

Curiously, the phrase did not appear in the text that her team had given to the press. According to the archives of the Margaret Thatcher Foundation , it has been preserved thanks to a BBC radio recording.

The Conservatives won those elections , held just over two weeks later, by a wide margin. For her supporters, the phrase summarizes her defense of private saving against state intervention ; for her critics, it is an example of the kind of exaggeration typical of a campaign.

Who was Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) was the first woman to lead the British Government. She held the office between 1979 and 1990 , the longest continuous term in the United Kingdom since the early 19th century, and led the Conservative Party to three consecutive electoral victories.

Known as the ‘Iron Lady’, she pushed through privatizations, curbed the power of the trade unions, and led the Falklands War in 1982. Her legacy still divides British society: for some, she modernized the country, while for others, she worsened inequality and the decline of industrial areas.
