T arek El Moussa believes hard work deserves recognition, and he is standing by that philosophy after giving his 16-year-old daughter, Taylor, a luxury SUV worth approximately $150,000 for her birthday.

The former Flip or Flop star has faced questions about the lavish present, particularly whether buying such an expensive vehicle for a teenager could send the wrong message. But El Moussa insists the gift was not simply about spending money. According to the television personality, Taylor earned it through her academic achievements, commitment to soccer and willingness to put in extra work.

Speaking with Nicole Lapin on h er Money Rehab podcast on Wednesday,, the 45-year-old explained why he and his family decided to surprise Taylor with a luxury BMW X5 ahead of her 16th birthday in September.

"She got a 4.2 GPA," El Moussa said. "She was MVP of her freshman soccer team. She's an absolutely fantastic kid and didn't just get it; she actually earned it. And if you ask me, she deserved it because she worked really, really hard." The vehicle represented a reward for his daughter's accomplishments rather than an extravagant birthday purchase without conditions.

He also revealed that Taylor had not requested such an expensive present. In fact, she would have been perfectly happy with a used Honda, making the surprise even more unexpected.

There was another consideration behind the decision

"That thing is built like a tank," El Moussa explained. "The biggest thing for me was safety. She's in a safe car and she loves it." Lapin jokingly responded by asking whether El Moussa would adopt her before raising a question that many parents might have after hearing about the $150,000 gift: Was he concerned that giving a teenager such an expensive vehicle could spoil her?

The reality television personality acknowledged that Taylor has grown up with a lifestyle considerably different from the one he experienced as a child. "She was flying in private jets when she was, like, 1 year old," he said. "So this kid has grown up around things. When I grew up, I didn't have anything, right? So I'm obsessed with things because I never had things. She's always had things."

That difference, he explained, has influenced how his daughter views material possessions. El Moussa argued that Taylor's accomplishments demonstrate she does not take her privileged upbringing for granted. Beyond her 4.2 GPA and soccer recognition, she has participated in additional coaching, showing a commitment to improving her skills.

"If she were going to be a spoiled brat, she probably wouldn't have got the 4.2 GPA, she probably wouldn't have been MVP of our soccer team, and she probably wouldn't have done the extra coaching, right?" he said. "For me, this is a reward for all the work she's done."

The suprise was notable for Taylor's parents

He also revealed that financial education has become part of his parenting approach. Taylor has already started investing in stocks and real estate, according to her father, who wants her to develop an understanding of money beyond simply having access to it.

The birthday surprise was also notable because it brought together Taylor's parents, who have maintained a cooperative relationship despite their divorce. In August, El Moussa, his wife Heather and his ex-wife Christina Haack joined forces to purchase the BMW X5 and surprise Taylor with the vehicle.

The family shared footage of the moment on Instagram, where Taylor appeared visibly shocked before embracing her father in an emotional reaction. "What's more of a surprise... the car for Taylor or the fact that the three of us actually pulled this off?" they joked in the caption.

"The car is so well deserved, we love you so much Tay." Heather also recalled Taylor's reaction during an appearance with El Moussa at Page Six's 2026 Virtual Reali-Tea Awards in New York earlier this month.
