Midterm Elections 2026 Senate Predictions: Which candidates are more likely to win next Tuesday?

Kansas, Texas, Maine and Ohio serve as key battle grounds

Control of the US Senate is at stake when voters go to the polls November 3 with the Republicans defending a 53-47 majority, whilst the Democrats need a net gain of four seats to take control. The campaign is shaped by inflation, and household costs remain concerns, while the Iran war has raised questions about its duration, financial impact and fuel prices whilst immigration enforcement is another issue.

President Donald Trump' s approval is part of the political backdrop as Nate Silver's Silver Bulletin average put him at 37%, while the national congressional ballot average showed Democrats ahead by 8.9 points. And the latest surveys point to several close contests as several Republican -held seats are under pressure in states that backed Trump in 2024 – notably in Kansas , Texas , Maine and Ohio . Those battle grounds have produced polling showing Democratic candidates competitive or ahead, creating a challenge for Republicans seeking to preserve their majority and an unlikely turnaround compared to previous voting trends. Kansas has become one of the election's most striking contests as Adam Hamilton leads the Republican Senator Roger Marshall by 54%-44% in a Washington Post survey despite Trump 's 16-point state victory in 2024. Texas is drawing national attention, although its polling is less consistent as James Talarico leads the Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton 49%-43% in a CNN survey and 49%-47% in a Texas Southern University/YouGov poll. In Maine , Democrat Troy Jackson leads Republican Senator Susan Collins 49%-45% in CNN polling as Ohio offers another possible pickup, with former Senator Sherrod Brown ahead of Republican Jon Husted by three points. But the Democrats are also defending seats while seeking gains as in Michigan , Abdul El-Sayed leads Republican Mike Rogers 49%-42% whilst New Hampshire ’s Democrat Chris Pappas leads former Senator John Sununu 48%-41%. Over in North Carolina , former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper leads Republican Michael Whatley 52%-39% and Georgia 's Senator Jon Ossoff is also ahead of Republican Representative Mike Collins , 48%-40%.

What would the Senate result mean for Trump's presidency?

If Democrats win four seats and take the Senate , they would gain control of committees and the power to shape the chamber's agenda as the change would also affect confirmation of cabinet officials, ambassadors and federal judges. A Democratic majority could scrutinize administration decisions through hearings and investigations, whilst making it harder for Trump to secure approval for nominees. Republicans would lose control of the Senate calendar. Although the president would retain his veto and ability to issue execute orders, if Republicans hold their majority, Trump would keep a more supportive Senate for judicial and administration appointments. Retaining both chambers would also give his party greater control over hearings, legislation and the congressional response to the White House , avoiding him becoming a lame duck President in the final years of his tenure. But even a Democratic Senate would not give the party unrestricted power. Major legislation can face the filibuster, and overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers.
