What time will sunset be after this weekend's Daylight Savings ending for 2026 and everything you need to know about it?

Millions of Americans will notice darkness arriving much earlier this weekend as clocks move back one hour

The sun will disappear below the horizon noticeably earlier across much of the United States this weekend, with the end of daylight saving time bringing an abrupt change to evening routines.

On Sunday, November 1, 2026, Americans in most states will turn their clocks back one hour, shifting the country from daylight saving time to standard time.

Although the adjustment provides an additional hour overnight, it also means sunset will occur approximately 60 minutes earlier according to the clock.

The difference will be especially noticeable in northern cities, where shorter autumn days are already reducing the amount of natural light available after work and school.

New York, Chicago, Boston and Seattle will all experience sunsets before 5 p.m. on Sunday, while southern cities such as Miami and Houston will retain more evening daylight.

What time will sunset be on November 1, 2026?

The precise time depends on geographic location, with northern areas generally experiencing shorter days as winter approaches.

Here are the approximate local sunset times for major US cities on Sunday, November 1.

The change will be particularly striking in northern Maine, where sunset in Caribou is expected at approximately 4:16 p.m.

In contrast, southern locations will continue enjoying daylight later into the afternoon, although they will still experience the one-hour clock adjustment.

When do clocks go back in the United States?

Daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 1, when clocks move backward to 1 a.m.

That means the hour between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. occurs twice, giving most Americans an additional hour overnight.

Smartphones, computers and other connected devices generally update automatically, while traditional clocks and certain household appliances may require manual changes.

Not every state participates, however. Hawaii and most of Arizona remain on standard time throughout the year, with the Navajo Nation observing daylight saving time as an exception.

Why will it get darker even earlier throughout November?

The clock change doesn't alter the actual amount of daylight, but the Northern Hemisphere will continue experiencing shorter days as winter approaches.

Daylight hours have gradually decreased since the summer solstice in June, with the trend continuing until the winter solstice on December 21.

Seattle, for example, is expected to lose more than 70 minutes of daylight between the beginning and end of November.

The decrease will be less substantial in southern states, where changes in daylight duration are smaller throughout the year.

Despite the earlier sunsets, Americans can expect brighter mornings immediately after the clock change.

Daylight saving time will begin again on Sunday, March 14, 2027 , when clocks move forward one hour and evening daylight returns later according to the clock.
