Diego Pavia’s NFL hopes have taken a hit, but his relationship with Deion Sanders remains strong.

After visiting Boulder for Colorado’s matchup against Utah, the former Vanderbilt quarterback thanked Sanders and his son, Deion Sanders Jr ., for welcoming him and treating him like family. Coach Prime responded publicly with a heartfelt message, telling Pavia , “Love ya, man! You are a real 1. God bless u.”

The comment offered encouragement to a quarterback whose professional career has stalled before he could make his regular-season debut.

Pavia shared highlights from his Boulder weekend on social media, praising the atmosphere at the stadium and expressing his appreciation for the hospitality he received.

“Boulder, thank you guys, for an awesome experience. I loved the way you guys got rowdy for the ball players,” Pavia wrote. “I was super entertained myself, and I will definitely be back to support my guys! SKOO BUFFS.

He also said he planned to return to support the Buffaloes and directed followers to his YouTube channel for footage from the visit.

The trip came shortly after Pavia revealed during a Twitch livestream that he’d like to play for Sanders . His appearance at Colorado’s game demonstrated his continued connection with the coach, who supported him even after the quarterback went undrafted.

Diego Pavia’s Colorado connection dates back to Jackson State

Pavia’s relationship with Sanders began before the 2022 college season, when Sanders was coaching Jackson State. Pavia previously explained that Sanders offered him an opportunity but was honest about his likely role as a backup behind his son, Shedeur Sanders.

Rather than accept that situation, Pavia chose New Mexico State before transferring to Vanderbilt in 2024. The decision proved significant for his development, as he eventually became one of college football’s most recognizable quarterbacks.

In 2025, Pavia threw for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns, helping Vanderbilt achieve its first 10-win season in program history.

His performances earned him second place in the Heisman Trophy voting, finishing behind Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Pavia’s remarkable college career strengthened his hopes of securing an NFL opportunity.

However, his professional journey hasn’t gone as planned. After going undrafted in 2026, Pavia signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in April. The team reportedly offered him a three-year, $3.1 million contract, but waived him in July to make room for veteran offensive lineman Ethan Pocic .

Pavia has yet to secure another NFL contract. Reuters has reported that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hold his Canadian Football League negotiating rights, potentially providing another avenue for continuing his professional career.

Sanders had already shown public support for Pavia after the draft, posting, “I BELIEVE IN YOU, MY MAN!”. His latest Instagram response reinforces that encouragement, although it doesn’t suggest that Pavia will join Colorado in a coaching or playing capacity.
