Pressure mounts on Steve Sarkisian to bench Arch Manning: "He isn't paid to protect certain players"

Texas has fallen from No.1 to No.19, leaving its coach facing growing questions ahead of a crucial Ole Miss showdown

The expectations surrounding Arch Manning have rarely been higher, but six games into the 2026 college football season, the Texas quarterback is facing the possibility that his starting position could come under genuine threat.

Consecutive defeats to Florida and Oklahoma have sent the Longhorns tumbling from No. 1 to No. 19 in the AP Poll, leaving their College Football Playoff ambitions increasingly vulnerable.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian has responded by reaffirming his confidence in Manning , even as questions grow about whether backup quarterback KJ Lacey deserves an opportunity.

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit , however, believes Texas has reached a stage where difficult decisions can no longer be postponed.

"Sarkisian is paid not to protect certain players, but to win," Herbstreit said during a discussion with fellow analyst Joey Galloway.

Kirk Herbstreit questions Steve Sarkisian's loyalty to Arch Manning

Texas enters Saturday's matchup against No. 7 Ole Miss with a 4-2 record and increasingly little room for another defeat.

Herbstreit believes those circumstances should influence Sarkisian's approach to the quarterback position, particularly if Manning continues struggling to deliver consistent performances.

"To me, their wiggle room is over," Herbstreit explained. "There are a few teams whose wiggle room is over, and Texas is in playoff mode for the duration, starting Saturday."

The ESPN analyst acknowledged Sarkisian's desire to support his starting quarterback but suggested that loyalty should have limits when an entire season is at stake.

"He wants to be loyal to his quarterback, but at some point, you have to move on from that mindset," Herbstreit added.

Although Herbstreit would not be surprised by a quarterback change, he stressed that he had received no indication from inside the program that one was imminent.

Manning's performances have been inconsistent, although the Longhorns' problems extend considerably beyond their quarterback.

Through six games, the junior has completed a season featuring 1,295 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, while absorbing 17 sacks.

Texas has also struggled to establish a dependable running game, averaging approximately 135 rushing yards per contest and frequently leaving Manning under pressure.

"They're not great up front, by the way. They can't run the ball, and that puts a lot of pressure on Arch and the offensive line in pass protection," Herbstreit said.

"It's so weird to see a Sarkisian team with the inability two years in a row to run the damn football."

Those shortcomings have contributed to an offense that has struggled to find consistency against stronger opponents.

Will Steve Sarkisian bench Arch Manning against Ole Miss?

Despite the growing criticism, Sarkisian has made clear that Manning remains his preferred quarterback ahead of the Ole Miss matchup.

"Arch can play better for us. He's our starter, but I need to see a better version of Arch Manning," Sarkisian said Monday.

Lacey could receive additional first-team practice repetitions, potentially allowing Texas to assess its alternatives without immediately changing its starting lineup.

However, with Ole Miss and LSU still presenting significant challenges, Sarkisian faces a narrowing window to revive the Longhorns' postseason ambitions.

Manning retains his coach's confidence, but Herbstreit's criticism shows the increasing pressure on Texas to deliver results rather than rely on the quarterback's considerable potential.
