Shedeur Sanders runs out of time as Deshaun Watson puts on a masterclass

Deshaun Watson’s breakout game could change Shedeur Sanders’ future in Cleveland as the Browns face a major quarterback decision before the trade deadline.

D eshaun Watson ’s first 300-yard game with the Cleveland Browns could completely change the outlook for Shedeur Sanders within the franchise.

Watson delivered his best performance since arriving in Cleveland during the 27-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, leading the Browns to a 5-2 record and solidifying his position as the team’s starting quarterback.

With the veteran regaining momentum and confidence, a trade is increasingly emerging as the most realistic path for Sanders to get a genuine opportunity to play in the NFL .

Unless an injury occurs, it is becoming less and less likely that Cleveland will turn to the rookie this season. Watson has put the Browns at the top of the AFC North , and the team’s strong start gives him the margin to remain in control of the offense even if he experiences some struggles in the coming weeks.

For a team with playoff aspirations, reopening the quarterback competition immediately after its best offensive performance of the year does not appear to be a priority.

“That was his most complete game. Close to Pittsburgh in terms of where he’s going to the ball, being in control, and his composure. The way we operated was better. Not perfect, but better,” Monken said after beating the Titans. “Real credit to him. He has something in him to make plays when it counts. We’re just trying to flat line out play earlier in the game and being more consistent.”

Although Cleveland could still keep Sanders as a backup option, Watson’s performance increases the chances that the organization listens to offers before the November 10 trade deadline, especially with Dillon Gabriel nearing a return.

Deshaun Watson delivers his best performance with Cleveland

Watson completed 25 of 36 passes for 308 yards , threw an interception and added a 9-yard rushing touchdown . It was his first 300-yard passing game since joining the Browns.

Cleveland’s offense produced its best total of the season with 491 yards, surpassing the 372 yards it recorded against Pittsburgh. Rookie KC Concepcion starred with eight receptions for 129 yards , while the rushing attack adde d 183 yards .

It was Watson’s fifth game-winning drive of the season, a clear sign of the potential Monken’s offense can reach when the veteran is under center.

Cleveland must make a decision on Dillon Gabriel

The Browns’ next major decision will come Tuesday, when Dillon Gabriel’s 21-day practice window expires.

The quarterback is currently on injured reserve due to a back injury. Cleveland opened his return window on October 6, giving the team three weeks to activate him. If the Browns do not bring him back before that period ends, Gabriel will not be able to play again this season.

Keeping Watson, Gabriel, Sanders and rookie Taylen Green would force Cleveland to carry four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster , using a spot that could otherwise go toward strengthening other positions.

Both Gabriel and Sanders have starting experience in the NFL and could become trade options if general manager Andrew Berry receives an attractive offer.

Moving either player would solve the quarterback logjam on the roster and allow the Browns to keep Green without risking him on waivers.
