What was supposed to be a landmark celebration of the NFL 's international expansion has become a complicated security operation, with the league canceling a planned fan gathering ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers ' meeting with the New Orleans Saints .

The decision affects Steelers House , an event organized in Paris' Bastille neighborhood, where recent unrest has raised concerns about bringing large groups of supporters together.

However, the NFL has made clear that the cancellation doesn't extend to Sunday's game at Stade de France, which remains scheduled as the first regular-season NFL contest played in France.

The announcement comes amid demonstrations over living costs, education and public services that have escalated into violent clashes in several French cities.

The league confirmed Thursday that it had abandoned plans for the Steelers House gathering following discussions about safety in the surrounding area.

"Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris," the NFL said in a statement.

"Preparations for Sunday's NFL Paris game at Stade de France continue as planned, with the NFL working closely with local authorities and partners on all operations and security matters."

Supporters have been advised to consult the NFL OnePass app for information about other activities taking place during the week.

NFL strengthen security arrangements

The decision follows demonstrations that began over concerns about education, rising living costs and declining public services before escalating into clashes across France.

Although many protesters participated peacefully, incidents of violence, looting and property damage have prompted a significant response from law enforcement.

The unrest has created additional challenges for organizers preparing to welcome thousands of international football supporters to the French capital.

NFL executive Peter O'Reilly previously emphasized that protecting everyone involved in the event remained the league's highest priority.

"There's nothing more important from our standpoint than the teams' security, the fans' security -- everybody involved with this game," O'Reilly said during the NFL's fall league meeting.

He explained that league officials were working with French authorities and the United States State Department while reviewing preparations as conditions developed.

Steelers vs Saints remains scheduled at Stade de France

Despite the disruption to off-field activities, the league remains committed to staging its first regular-season game in France on Sunday, October 25.

The Stade de France , located in Saint-Denis, has undergone significant modifications to accommodate the NFL, including improvements to the playing surface, expanded locker rooms and additional broadcasting infrastructure.

The venue previously hosted the 1998 FIFA World Cup final and events during the 2024 Paris Olympics, making it a prominent setting for the league's latest international expansion.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara has expressed enthusiasm about participating in the occasion, which represents another milestone for professional football overseas.

"I'm definitely excited for the scenery and to be a part of it," Kamara said. "It's the first NFL game being played in France."

The league's decision to cancel Steelers House illustrates the challenges surrounding the event, but officials haven't announced any changes to Sunday's kickoff arrangements.

Further security measures will remain an important part of preparations as the NFL attempts to deliver its historic Paris debut despite the unrest.
