Pat McAfee ‘fails’ with alternative Monday Night Football show

The network's latest alternative NFL broadcast has failed to match the audience drawn by Peyton and Eli Manning

P at McAfee has become one of ESPN's most prominent personalities, appearing across the network's biggest programs and developing a devoted following through his outspoken approach to sports commentary.

However, his latest assignment has delivered an unexpectedly modest audience, with the debut of Monday Night Football Field Pass struggling to compete with other NFL broadcasts.

The alternative presentation aired during the San Francisco 49ers ' Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders , filling a gap in ESPN's schedule while Peyton Manning and Eli Manning took a break from their regular ManningCast duties.

According to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, McAfee 's broadcast attracted approximately 351,000 viewers, a figure that fell considerably short of the audience typically watching the Manning brothers.

The reported numbers placed McAfee 's debut behind another alternative NFL presentation, with NFL Network's Next Gen Stats broadcast drawing approximately 469,000 viewers.

Even the ManningCast , which has experienced its own ratings difficulties this season, performed considerably better during its Week 2 presentation of the Giants-Rams game.

That broadcast attracted approximately 661,000 viewers, nearly twice the audience reportedly recorded by McAfee .

"That is around half of what the Mannings have received," Marchand reported when discussing the figures.

He also highlighted ESPN's decision not to confirm the numbers publicly: "ESPN declined to confirm the McAfee numbers, which is not common practice."

The network hasn't suggested that the disappointing debut will affect its existing plans for the alternative broadcast.

Why McAfee faces a difficult challenge

McAfee 's program was designed to provide a different experience from ESPN's traditional Monday Night Football coverage, emphasizing his recognizable personality and informal conversations with colleagues.

However, the network already offers several ways to watch NFL games, including the established commentary partnership of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman .

The Manning brothers have also spent several seasons developing their alternative format, combining football analysis with humor and celebrity guests.

McAfee , meanwhile, remains heavily involved in ESPN's wider programming, hosting his weekday show while contributing to College GameDay and Monday Night Countdown.

His substantial presence across the network demonstrates his popularity, but the debut figures suggest that attracting an established audience to another NFL broadcast may require time.

ESPN confirms more Pat McAfee broadcasts

ESPN has already scheduled several additional Field Pass appearances, giving McAfee further opportunities to establish the format.

His next broadcast is scheduled for Week 9, when the Buffalo Bills visit the Minnesota Vikings .

Additional games include Panthers-Buccaneers in Week 12, Steelers-Jaguars in Week 14 and Giants-Lions in Week 16, with another presentation planned for Week 18.

McAfee is also scheduled to provide alternative coverage of Super Bowl LXI on ESPNU, while the Manning brothers will present their own broadcast on ESPN2.

The upcoming schedule provides ESPN with a broader opportunity to assess whether the format can attract more viewers.

Although McAfee 's debut fell short of expectations suggested by his television profile, a single broadcast cannot determine the long-term prospects of the experiment.

His next appearances will provide a clearer indication of whether Field Pass can establish itself alongside ESPN's existing NFL coverage.
