The game of the week: Broncos host the Chiefs at Mile High
The hottest clash of the week takes place at Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High, where the Broncos host the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC West classic with enormous implications. Both teams come in hot: the Chiefs lead the division with a 5-1 record, while Denver is close behind at 5-2. Without exaggeration, it’s a game for the divisional lead.
Kansas City relies on its usual backbone . Patrick Mahomes remains the engine at quarterback, wi th Travis Kelce as his trusted target at tight end and a young receiving corps led by Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice. In the backfield, Kenneth Walker III provides the ground game the Chiefs have been looking for to balance their offense.
On the other side, the Broncos built their strong start on a solid defense and an offense led by young QB Bo Nix. Their outside weapons Courtland Sutton and Jaylen Waddle, along with running back J.K. Dobbins and tight end Evan Engram, give Denver enough of a range to trouble anyone. Home-field advantage at Denver's altitude, historically an uncomfortable factor for visitors, adds extra spice to the matchup.
Implications in the race for the top spots
The top of the league belongs, for now, to the Minnesota Vikings, the only undefeated team with a 6-0 record and the best squad in the NFC. Their visit to the Detroit Lions is one of the toughest tests of their season.
Detroit is third in the NFC North and one of the most productive offenses in the league, with 184 points scored. A stumble by Minnesota would reopen the conversation for the conference’s top seed, with the San Francisco 49ers lurking close behind.
In the AFC, the picture is extremely tight. Kansas City and Buffalo share the best record in the conference at 5-1, followed by a pack of teams at 5-2: Cleveland, Denver, and Pittsburgh.
That’s why Browns vs. Steelers in the AFC North carries so much weight: both come in at 5-2 and tied at the top of their division, so the winner will take a direct edge in a race that looks set to be decided down the stretch.
The other big clash between contenders is Bills vs. Ravens at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium. The Bills are looking to maintain their pace at the top of the AFC; Baltimore needs the win to avoid falling behind in a conference with no margin for error.
At the bottom of the league, the Los Angeles Chargers are living a nightmare: 0-6 and without a single win, with only 90 points scored, the worst offensive mark in the league. Their matchup against the Rams is the first real opportunity to get on the board. Just above them are the Tennessee Titans and the Miami Dolphins, the latter with a dreadful -59 point differential.
Miami’s outlook does not improve with the schedule: a visit to the New England Patriots, who are in second place in the AFC East and come in as favorites. In the NFC, the Washington Commanders close out Monday’s slate against Philadelphia, trying to stop a hemorrhage that already has them on the penultimate rung of the conference.
