Brittany Mahomes' complaint against the referees sparks a new controversy: “The referees handed her husband a Super Bowl in the 2022-23 season”
Brittany was left unimpressed with a false start penalty called against the Kansas City Chiefs

B rittany Mahomes did not hold back after a late penalty erased a potential Kansas City Chiefs touchdown against the Denver Broncos , but her criticism quickly attracted a wave of backlash from fans who pointed to controversial calls that have previously benefited Patrick Mahomes . With four seconds remaining and Kansas City trailing 28-24, Mahomes appeared to have delivered a dramatic winner by finding Rashee Rice in the end zone but officials instead penalized right tackle Jaylon Moore for a false start, cancelling the score and pushing the Chiefs five yards further from the goal line.
The Chiefs could not get the job done as the Broncos defense pulled through to secure the win by sacking the quarterback, and Brittany then took her frustration to social media, questioning why such a call would be made at such a decisive moment. However, her reaction divided supporters, with some sharing her disbelief while others reminded her that Kansas City has also benefited from contentious officiating decisions – including in Super Bowls . “You can't tell me you call that on a game-winning TD,” Brittany wrote via Instagram Stories. “Oh wait yeah I can 'cause it's us. The weakest call I have ever seen. You can't tell me otherwise.” And unsurprisingly, the response was swift as fans mocked the Chiefs ' complaints about referees. One fan wrote via X.com, formerly known as Twitter, “Chiefs fans complaining about refs LMAOOOOOOOOOO.” A second said, “The Chiefs literally won a Super Bowl because of a comically weak defensive holding call against the Eagles. Spare me.” And a third simply commented, “Sure Brittany.”
Have the Chiefs had bad luck with the referees in the 2026 NFL season?
Andy Reid also questioned the late flag in Denver , as the argument surrounding Sunday's defeat has reopened a wider discussion about Kansas City 's experiences with officials this season, but the record is not entirely one-sided. With disputed decisions in earlier games against the Indianapolis Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders also drawing attention, even CBS analyst J.J. Watt had also highlighted other decisions during the contest against the Broncos , including a holding penalty against Trey Smith and a facemask call against Drue Tranquill . Kansas City 's September 20 meeting with the Colts provided a different kind of controversy as Indianapolis won a disputed first-down spot involving Keenan Allen , while an overtime review overturned a fumble ruling against Laquon Treadwell . Ruling the player down by contact, the Colts retained possession and had a chance to win the game instead of a contest-ending recovery for the Chiefs , as Mahomes eventually guided Kansas City to a 33-30 victory in overtime. The incident therefore offered little support for the argument that officiating decisions had consistently worked against Kansas City whilst the October 4 game against Las Vegas brought another disputed moment. A late reception by Tre Tucker was allowed to stand despite television footage appearing to show the ball touching the ground and former NFL Vice President of Officiating, Dean Blandino , argued that officials should have intervened inside the final two minutes – although the Chiefs pulled through. Additional questions of hip drop tackles injuring Tyquan Thorton and Travis Kelce in recent weeks whilst also going unchecked have only added to the build-up to Brittany ’s controversial post as those incidents complicate the suggestion that Kansas City has been repeatedly disadvantaged. However, there was more to the Broncos defeat than referees as Kansas City surrendered a 24-13 advantage in the fourth quarter, while Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal before Denver scored the decisive touchdown as Mahomes finished with 321 passing yards and three touchdowns.
