Patrick Mahomes leaves Chiefs practice on a speeding cart, but it's not what it might seem
The scene looked concerning until Mahomes gave it away

S eeing Patrick Mahomes leave a Kansas City Chiefs practice on a cart moving at a pretty good speed is enough to make some fans look twice. Especially right now. The quarterback is coming back from the serious knee injury that ended his 2025 season, so practically anything involving Mahomes, his legs and a cart can immediately raise questions.
But what happened Thursday morning in St. Joseph appears far less dramatic than the first few seconds of the video might suggest. Mahomes wasn't being rushed away in obvious distress. He was sitting calmly in the passenger seat and even waved to fans as the cart made its way past them. More importantly, the Chiefs had already wrapped up their 18th and final full-team training camp practice at Missouri Western State University.
So yes, Mahomes left Chiefs practice on a cart that was moving fast that part really happened. But the context changes everything. There has been no credible report that the quarterback suffered a new injury Thursday or that his ride away from the field was connected to a medical emergency. His relaxed body language and interaction with the fans certainly didn't make it look like one either.
The timing matters even more because Mahomes has been under a microscope throughout training camp. He underwent surgery after tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee in December, but was fully cleared by his surgeon for football activities before camp began. Since then, Kansas City has carefully watched his progression as he works toward being ready for the regular season.
Th e Chiefs held a lighter practice in shells after three consecutive days in full pads, and Mahomes and Travis Kelce were among the veterans making their final walk down the familiar hill at St. Joseph as Kansas City officially brought another training camp to an end.
Mahomes also won't play Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but that decision wasn't announced as the result of something happening to him on Thursday . Andy Reid said Justin Fields will start, followed by Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun, while Mahomes sits out. The Chiefs do have several players dealing with injuries as camp ends, but Mahomes was not among the new injury concerns Reid detailed Thursday.
Sometimes a video needs only a few seconds to make something look much more dramatic than it really is. A cart was moving quickly away from Chiefs practice with Patrick Mahomes sitting inside, and given everything he has been through with his knee, it's easy to understand why that image might get attention.
