Tyreek Hill's NFL comeback: why a Chiefs reunion makes sense and what could stop it

"Cheetah" is recovering from a devastating knee injury and a case off the field

The Kansas City Chiefs may have an opportunity to reunite Patrick Mahomes with one of the most explosive wide receivers of his career. Whether they are willing to take that chance is another question.

Tyreek Hill remains a free agent as the 2026 NFL season approaches its midpoint, and Kansas City has emerged as a potential landing spot for the veteran receiver. With injuries depleting the Chiefs' receiving corps , the possibility of bringing back “Cheetah” has become increasingly intriguing.

The Chiefs have reportedly contacted Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, about a possible reunion. According to The Athletic's Mike Silver , the organization is “very interested” in the idea, and several prominent Kansas City players have expressed support for bringing Hill back.

But interest does not equal an agreement. Hill is recovering from a devastating knee injury, and a recent civil court verdict has introduced another significant consideration for any team contemplating a contract.

Can Kansas City sign Tyreek Hill in Week 7?

Yes. The Chiefs can sign Hill at any point during the season because he is a free agent. There is no confirmed deal with Kansas City , however, and his return to the NFL depends on his health, contract negotiations and the circumstances surrounding his availability. Hill's agent provided an update on Oct. 13, describing the situation as fluid and suggesting that a deal could happen at any time if the right opportunity emerged.

“I think it’s very fluid,” Rosenhaus told Miami-based reporter Josh Moser. “I think a deal could happen anytime. We are looking for the right situation, the right contract, the right team, the right fit, the right approach from a medical standpoint. Tyreek’s feeling good health-wise. ” That statement leaves the door open for Kansas City , but it also makes clear that Hill and his representatives are evaluating more than a team's willingness to sign him.

Hill is 32 and has not played since suffering a serious knee injury with the Miami Dolphins in September 2025. A team interested in signing him would need to determine whether he can withstand the physical demands of NFL football and contribute at a meaningful level. A November return has been discussed, but a target date is not the same as medical clearance or a guaranteed roster spot.

Why a reunion makes sense for the Chiefs

Kansas City's interest is understandable given the injuries at wide receiver. Rashee Rice injured his hamstring during the Chiefs' Week 4 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, while Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle in the same game. Both were ruled out for the Week 7 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, leaving the offense with fewer established options at the position.

Xavier Worthy remains an important part of the receiving group, but adding a proven veteran could give Mahomes another weapon and provide the offense with greater flexibility. Hill would also bring something that few available receivers could offer: an established history with the Chiefs' offensive system.

During his first six NFL seasons in Kansas City, Hill recorded 479 receptions for 6,630 yards and 56 receiving touchdowns in the regular season. His combination of acceleration, route-running ability and open-field speed made him one of the league's most dangerous offensive players.

He also won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs, working alongside Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce before his departure in 2022. A reunion would not require Kansas City to introduce Hill to its quarterback or explain the basic principles of its offense.

Familiarity with the coaching staff and system could help shorten the adjustment period, although his injury recovery would remain a major variable. The enthusiasm inside the locker room is another encouraging sign for the possibility of a deal.
