“The course of true love never did run smooth”: Shakespeare’s quote that can mislead you

William Shakespeare wrote one of literature’s most quoted lines about love.

William Shakespeare knew how to put into words what many people felt, and one of his most famous quotes about love continues to be repeated centuries later: “The course of true love never did run smooth.” He wrote it in A Midsummer Night’s Dream , where Lysander says the line, but there is something that can be misleading when the quote is taken too literally.

Not everything goes the way we expect

The quote suggests that true love does not always follow an easy path. A relationship can face differences, misunderstandings or circumstances that make things more difficult without making the feelings any less real. Up to that point, the idea is fairly easy to understand .

The problem comes when that idea is taken too far. There is a difference between accepting that love can go through difficult moments and thinking that problems are proof that the love is real. If a relationship is filled with jealousy, arguments, uncertainty and pain, repeating that “true love never did run smooth” can make all of it seem like a necessary part of the story .

What if your love is peaceful?

A stable relationship does not need to constantly teeter on the edge of conflict to be intense, deep or genuine. There is also no rule that says the more obstacles a couple faces, the stronger their love must be. Peace does not make a feeling any less authentic .
