Zendaya’s greeting with France’s first lady sparks debate over an often-overlooked gesture of respect
Her exchange with Brigitte Macron sparks debate over a familiar courtesy

Sometimes respect is expressed through something as small as getting out of a chair. Someone approaches, offers a greeting, and you stand to meet them. For many people, that movement is an almost automatic courtesy, whether they are welcoming a world leader, a friend’s parent or someone they have just met. That expectation helps explain why Zendaya’s brief exchange with Brigitte Macron has attracted so much attention : she greeted France’s first lady, but remained seated.
The moment occurred at Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2027 show at the Louvre on October 6. In footage published by Paris Match, Zendaya initially appears not to notice Macron trying to greet her after her exchange with LVMH chairman and CEO Bernard Arnault. She then turns toward Macron, smiles and shakes her hand. The interaction is friendly, yet the absence of that familiar movement standing up became the focus of the reaction online.
Why a small courtesy can carry so much weight
Standing can communicate warmth, consideration or respect without a word being spoken. Its familiarity also makes its absence easy to notice and tempting to interpret. Did Zendaya simply miss the moment? Did she consider a seated handshake perfectly appropriate? Was there another reason?
The clip cannot answer those questions. It does not establish that she deliberately withheld a courtesy, disagreed with Macron or intended to send a message.
There is also a difference between wishing someone had shown an additional courtesy and concluding that they showed disrespect.
Madame Figaro emphasized that Zendaya smiled, made eye contact and greeted Macron naturally, arguing that the exchange showed no sign of contempt . Some viewers likewise defended the actress as polite or apparently caught off guard. Others remained focused on the chair. Both reactions center on the same few seconds, but assign different weight to what happened and what did not.
Viewers may wonder whether Zendaya would have stood for someone else, but this clip provides no fair basis for that comparison. What it leaves is a human question about everyday consideration: how much should we read into a missing courtesy when the greeting itself was warm?
